Default spur gears

The traxxas slash 1/16 scale came with an extra spur gear now I know the manual says in order to go 50 plus miles an hour you need to put on the extra supplied spur gear and hook two batteries up in series. My question is this if running just the supplied battery only hooking up one battery would there be any difference in speed between the two gears? one gear is smaller then the other, now I would think the smaller the gear the more top end but the bigger the gear the more torque and less top speed is this correct? thanks
