first off identify what you are wanting to do. Are you planning on racing at all, or just bashing?

If just bashing, maybe consider some of the RTR 1/8 vehicles out there. I know Caster Racing has one, and MRC sells one from the ZD Racing line that comes fully equipped including batteries. Just need a charger then. Same with a few others out there.

As a basher you are also not tied to requiring ROAR approved lipos. You can then find some pretty cheap that way either from overseas like Turnigy brand.

The Castle Creations MMM systems can be used in racing and bashing conditions. They are just not as smooth on the start up as a Tekin sensored or other sensored units (XERUN, SpeedPassion, LRP, Etc) . But they can be found for a bit less too.

Another thing to consider if you are not sure about lipos is LiFePo4 packs are getting out there more and more, and are a safer technology. In 1/8 electric, the cars are already overpowered, so you shouldn't have any power issues.

If your just bashing then I would look at the slash 4x4.

the 4x4 SCTs out right now aren't bad options either. Similar in overall size to a 1/8 buggy, but you can run them on a 2S or 3S pack with 1/10 scale sized electronics cheaper than a 1/8 4wd buggy.

Your shooting too high with that budget. Especially for electric. All the little things will add up. Be prepared to drop at least 1200 for a good 1/8th electric. Also, be aware of the monthly costs which are very high.

U could get the new slash 4x4 rtr, 2 2s lipo's and a lipo charger. All that under $800 and ud have a 2.4 radio with the rtr. The short course style 1/10 trucks are pretty much the size of an 1/8 buggy too.

For quality assured components and all new $800 is not enough. That is disgusting to think about and even more so to say but its true.

You can definitely get into a used 1/8e setup for less than that with quality stuff but you don't know how it was treated beforehand. Worst case scenario it was beat on so bad you end up having to spend more than new stuff costs to get it running again.

Prepare for AT LEAST $1000 to get a NIB 1/8e with everything you need. DO NOT skimp on a $30 radio as Interplanet said. 2.4s can be had for $100 these days and are worth every penny.

I would highly recommend the Slash 4x4 as well for bashing. RTR version is just fine and will cost less than $400. If you don't need waterproof sell the brushless for $150 and add another $100 for a MMM combo putting total investment at $500 so far.

Get the VXL expansion kit for $10 and a couple 4S 5000 lipos from HK for less than $125 shipped, Accuel 6w for and power supply for $50 and maybe ditch the stock servo for an XP 1015 at another $100.

This will give you a lot of great equipment, crazy fast speeds, very popular class at the track if you ever decide to go racing, and be under your $800 budget.

I guess I define quality on the product, not the price of the object.

the caster can be had for $380 if you know where to look, and the race roller at $175 is the deal of the century for an 1/8th electric, close second is the HB ve8 at 250 from stormer.

Some people are going to say you have to buy a $900 car, just because they bought one, or they want one and cannot afford it, for all the other people out there that are having FUN racing and bashing there are alot of cheaper option out there.

Also the 2.4 radio that I sent a link to is only $79, not that I am a big fan of airtronics, there rx's are expensive.

A full rig + electronics could be had for a bargain through the right searching. Like my Ofna 9.5 Pro buggy I built through eBay purchases and new Castle MMM setup - about $650 fully setup with radio and Zippy Lipo. The buggy was a lightly-used Roller with CNC upgrades and carbon fibre, threw in a mid-level servo and a used Spectrum DX2 + receiver.

Top of the line and new you'll be over $1000 you went for the $100+ servo, latest radio equip, name-brand LiPO, Tekin stuff and new or slightly used roller.

slash 4x4 + 2s 5k lipo +charger=$600.

Thats leaves you with $200 for spares which can make you fast on the track.
