im thinking about this 3:
mamba sidewinder with 4600kv
ezrun 60a esc with 5.5t motor
ezrun 35a esc with 9.0t motor.

mamba. my friend has an ez-run that he just bought, and it is so finicky. Sometimes reverse doesn't work.. other times it just won't go forward on the first few tries... odd stuff, but it's cheap.
I recently just got back in to the hobby after taking a long break off since the 90s, but one thing I have learned is that you don't want to buy things twice.

The Sidewinder is definitely the best choice here, but I have seen alot of the EZruns that perform just as well. As it is a cheaper product I am sure some people have had trouble, but the only real advantage to the Castle out of the box is a great warranty and the best customer service in the business. Then you also have the upgrade for a Castlelink, which gives the Sidewinder almost unlimited adjustability and free updates that can give you new features and power. That being said, if money was tight and I needed a system, I would jump all over another EZRun. I have a few systems for 18th and 10th scale cars and they both perform flawlessly. Plus I really like being able to tune with a card at trackside, instead of needing a computer to take full advantage like I do with my Castle products.
For 3s running a 4600 would likely be more than enough. The 5700 would be quite insane. But if thats what you want you can get it easy!

Sidewinder with the 5700 is not rated for use with 3s. 4600 on 2s will be fun. 4600 on 3s, as stated, will be plenty!

Are my prices off? I think sidewinder combo is $130ish and the 60A EZrun is within $20 of that? Or am I looking in the wrong place?

4600 is the best motor they make IMO. Faster than hell on 3S but gives you more options for gearing than on a 5700.
If you're bashing, definitely get the Sidewinder. It's worth the extra money.

Did your friend get a programming card with the unit? It's one of the easiest way to mess with the ESC....
BACK to the question:
I would get neither and just go for the Mamba Max + 4600Kv. Castlelink is a PIA on sidewinders, plus you gotta spend some extra cash to get the dongle to do Castlink on Sidewinders.
My only reason to get the Hobbywing was because of form factor. I bought it for my 4wd that has a VERY tight space.
