Default Idea for a new off-Road track?

A friend wants to make a 1/10th electric off-road track. He had two ideas for a track.
1) This would be a dirt track- no clay. Once the grass and weeds are gone it would be dirt.
2) Make the track lanes with astro turf.
Just wanted to give him some feed back as I'm not an off-road person.

Astro turf would be pretty cool but probably expensive! I'd run cleets on my tires like the football players use!
