Ni-Cad or NimH

Ni-Cad or NimH
What's better for a battery a Ni-Cad or NimH? Right now I run a 7-cell 8.4 volt duratrax with 5000 m.a.h. That will last me a good 25 to 30 minutes. It has a traxass plug for high voltage. What's better a Ni-Cad or Nimh? What will take more charges and still stay good? And what one is able to maintain high temperature without having damaged cells? There has to be a difference because most NimH batteries are more money anyway. But let me know what's better or lasts longer.

Neither. Lipo is the way to go.

Not sure you can find ni-cd anymore. Nimh are a better battery anyway imo. If you are looking for a new battery though I would go lipo. They are easier to care for. Hold a charge much longer and should give longer runtimes then the nimh counterparts. They are much easier to find. They will cost a little more but the benefits are well worth it.

Note for the OP. LiPo comes in 7.4v (equal to a 6-cell NiMH). However, you can go to 11.1 for even more power if your car can take it. That is called 3S - or 3 Cells In Series. You can get a 3S1P LiPo at 5000mAh and it will really be pretty awesome performance and runtime wise. If doing that, you would gear down your car by 1-2 teeth (or more) on your pinion. If you use an 18T pinion, you'd try 15 or 16T pinion.
For you to go to 7.4v LiPO from a 7-cell NiMH - you may add 1 tooth to your Pinion to get about the same performance.

Thanks
What Lipo would be equivalent to a 7-cell NimH with 4200 m.a.h ??

You either run a 2S 7.4V or a 3S 11.1V. I would stay with 7.4V. You can get a 40C 5000 pack from many different manufactures. I think this should be pretty close to your 7 cell. Maybe a little less power. It might feel about the same though since you will weigh a LOT less with the lipo.

If your not ready to go Lipo, then NiMH is really your only other option. The highest capacity NiCad I'm familiar with is 2400mAh, while NiMH are up to 5000mAh or so. That being said, in my experience NiCad is the more robust cell. I have old Sanyo 2000mAh packs that have been used and abused and still perform 10 years later; but your not going to get the run-time of NiMH or LiPo packs.

Any 20C LiPo battery will give you the equivalent of a 7 cell pack.
