I have yet to deside witch one to get, lipos are hella expensive but realy good, right, you have to watch them get a special chager . . . i think, and re-wire your esc, you can get a motor and a esc for the same price as a good lipo, so hostly i would wrater get a new esc and motor than a lipo+chrager, so please help me deside.
Going brushless with out Lipo is like putting 87 octane gas in a Ferrari. Sure it will run,but no where near it's performance potential. Also unless you have really good Nimh cells a brushless system can tax nimh cells to the point of complete uselessness. I have buddy that just bought a Stampede VXL and over the weekend he trashed two nimh packs to the point of no return.

are we talking about brushless? go brushless first and then lipo, the most common decision people made.

what?! that makes no sense. they had to be bad cells and had to be taken care of so poorly. or just havent been used in a long time. or used too much. nimh cells last a while and then lose performance quickly.

I should have stated that they were Venom packs. Only 3300mAh. He said that he ran each about 4 to 5 times a day for 3 days straight. He's a complete newbie, I tried to warn him but he didn't listen.
It's actually easier to go LiPo first and just get a LiPo cut off (20 bucks for one) or time your runs when you use LiPo without a brushless system. Plus a LiPo will boost your brushed system in the mean time until you can get brushless.
Go brushless, dont skimp, get a good system first then go lipo when you have the money.
We were running brushless here in Ks way before lipo even was an option. We had great results with NiMH packs! It was a blast running a 10 minute(yes ten minute!) main in stock truck with 4200 packs!
So yes it can be done! Just take care of your packs and they will take care of you!

Well what some people will do if they get brushless first is buy brand new nickel packs so they can run longer times with their new brushless system, therefore it takes them even longer to save up for LiPos. Plus most of the mains around here last longer than 10 mins.
Racing, Lipo first. Lipo batteries are better for brushed motors then Nimh cells requiring less attention(you still need to cut the comm and new brushes but not as often). At my local track one of the fastest guys Steven Hartson still uses brushed motors and wins more every race. Lipo also give a slightly more constant voltage as they are used and end of a quick race will hold there voltage better.
Bashing, brushless first. It is much less work to take care of and is a quick way to gain speed.

well i think that im going to get a motor first, and then save up for a LiPo becuase a lipo, charger and cut off would be spendy, mamby good but spendy.

I bought a slash just last week since they were on sale over the holiday for $170. I also picked up a Trinity 4600mah 7-cell NiMH and a Reedy 5000mah 7.4v 2s LiPo, both of which the Hobby Shop dude said the slash esc would handle with no problems (other than the absence of the lvc of course). After going through the NiMH pack once very slowly (5 min. on and 10 min. off) during the break-in period for the brushed motor, I waited another 20 min. for cooling off and then plugged in my fully charged Reedy 2s LiPo... turned it on... drove about 10 feet and.. POOOF! that distinct smell of electronics o'fire and a thick cloud of white smoke filled the air!
Luckily for me the Hobby Shop dude exchanged the esc over the counter rather than making me ship it to Traxxas for a warranty claim. It's been working fine all week with the new esc running the NiMH, but I'm just a little gun shy about putting the LiPo back in until I upgrade the esc and go brushless.. my .02 for what its worth.

There must have been something wrong with the ESC to begian with.It does happen.Almost everyone at my track runs a lipo with their stock slashes. And havent burned up.
