Finally installed my Tekno in my 8B. Going to run direct drive and need to determine which esc/motor combo. I have been racing 2wd, 4wd, and mod truck for 10 years and haven't spent much time following this electric 8th scale scene.
Racers, help me out. Some have said Tekin blows motors, Castle has a terrible feel especially off neutral. What are you RACING with?

I am from the slower is faster school.
I race with a Castle system, and can't understand why somebody would say it's got a "terrible feel especially off neutral" Are they saying it's not smooth? If so, then here's proof they don't know what they're talking about:

Since your using the Tekno kit with DD, you will benefit from the Tekin combo's sensored feature. It will be worth the extra money. The terrible off neutral feel does not exist with it. Remember to get a slightly longer sensor wire if you go this route. 250mm or more in length will be sufficient. Losi, Orion, or TQ sensor wire brand.
If you were using Tekno's clutch system, I would tell you the MMM would be fine as the clutch would get rid of the off neutral feel you describe. Tekno's clutch system works with my nitro background driving style therefore it is my preferred choice. You will notice in my sig that my cars with the clutch use the MMM and my DD car uses the Tekin combo.
Right now I tend to do fast laps with the clutch/MMM. As for Tekin blowing motors, not true. The issue that is plaguing their motors is simple to cure and they are addressing it very well. You will not be dissappointed with the Tekin motor no matter what ESC you go with. Personally I would just use Tekin motors, but have some new Medusa and Neu motors waiting in the tool box.
BTW, +1 on what R40 said. The MMM is still smooth!
If going sensorless, the Neu 1512 2.5D/F combined with the MMM works very well for racing. i used the motor in a variety of vehicles and have been happy with it. If it would fit better in the Hyper 9E I have, may have just went with it there too.

Castle is plenty smooth for serious racing and so is Tekin
Absolutley
I,ve run both systems and many combinations of both (Tekin ESC/Neu motor, MMM/tekin motor etc.) Their all good enough to race with when properly set up. I think the Tekin motors "fell" a little better than the CCneu's but CC's are more reliable right now until Tekin clears out all the bad rotors (new rotor is reliable). As far as the ESC's go, the RX8 & MMM work very well electrically. Mechanically they are both marginal designs that could be improved but they will get better & in the mean time they both have great customer support.
My vote is for the Tekin or SpeedPassion esc's and motors.
I do believe there was some issues with Tekin motors but it seems to be sorted.

My truggy is only used on the track. I love the RX8 I have. Have a rotor fail and was fixed right away by tekin. plus I fixed the original so now I have a backup. Do let that deter you from buying there product. They are on the ball....
Also I would recommend going with a lower KV motor. I have a 2050 and it was way to much. I am going down to the a much lower one...

Can you describe this in more detail. I still don't understand what "terrible off neutral" means...
Has anyone tried the LRP TC spec with a Novak BEC? Thoughts? I understand this is the way Associted drivers currently have their buggy/truggies set up...

using a TC spec would be a waste especially with most other esc's being later technology.

I apologize for the confusing phrase, but I have not driven either and that is the way it was described to me. It was related to the way the original Novak SS felt when compared to current brushless offerings. (I am dating myself now, lol). Seems like very limited steps in the progression...more of a lack of smoothness (not from a start) but when reapplying throttle mid corner, etc. after one releases from braking.
the terrible feeling is the engine not delivering fully smooth torque at low speeds
so the car kinda has to much torque then to litle and pulses up and down so keeping grip gets hard
about braking, i cant say how it feels since i have dd setup but use mechanical brakes(no drag/active engine brake)
I have some off neutral issues with my MMM and Medusa 60x2000 combo in my 8ight buggy. If you are under some power coming into a jump it is pretty good, but if you have a tight corner into a jump it can be unpredictable. Sometimes you get too little power and next time you pull just a bit more and way over jump. I believe I'm running 20% punch control, maybe I need to run more or setup a custom throttle curve.
