Exclamation Novak Havok 17.5 System in Slash

Hey everybody. Has anyone installed this system in their Slash? How do you like it? How does it compare to the Titan motor. My real question though, what gearing are you using?

17.5 systems are equal to a 27 turn brushed... You may want to try a lower sysem like a 10.5 since as soon as you switch from the titan you can't race stock slash, so It seems like you may want to just go for the faster system to have more fun

My track allows a 17.5 BL setup in a Slash as they also allow SC10s in this class. I am just not sure of the gearing.

Well, you need to find the smallest spur gear available for the Slash, I may be wrong, but I could swear I saw a 76 or 78 the other day at the LHS. Then find what the SC10 guys are running for 17.5 and figure their final drive ratio out.

Example:

SC10 - 78 spur, 28 pinion, 2.60 transmission
(78/28)*2.6 = 7.24

Slash - 78 spur, 29 pinion, 2.72 transmission
(78/29)*2.72 = 7.31

Get as close to the final drive as possible, then you can move the pinion up or down a tooth or 2 depending on heat and track conditions.

Traxxas offers a 76. I ordered a couple of those along with a 28, 29 and 30 pinion. I figured I would start out with the 28. I don't want to blow away the Titans on the straight, I just want the maintence free design of a brushless while staying fair. Hopefully the Novak Havoc system doesn't disappoint.

It won't! Havoc systems are great and its awesome how every part of the motor is replaceable

Does the gearing I posted above sound right?

I've got one in my Slash. It's my first brushless. I do like it but must say at this point I think my Titan was slightly faster. I'm running 86/25 gears on carpet and that's putting the motor around 160°F after about a 7-8 minute race. I've had a couple ESC thermal shutdowns...maybe I need to look into a fan.

However, the 17.5's in the local SC10's are noticeably faster. I suspect due to lighter vehicle and lighter, more efficient drivetrain.

That seems like a pretty low Final Drive Ratio but it worries me that your still getting it that hot. Have you tried a larger pinion? If so did it help or hurt?

That is more the range I was suspecting. Any Thermal shutdowns? How does it compare to Slash trucks running stock Titan motors?

its a little faster than the stock slash i had before my SC10. i was running 75/28 on my track and switched to 75/27 because the temps were just a little high for my liking....never a shutdown though. ive not needed anything down to a 24...just have saw others on here talk about running that gearing.

That puts the SC10 @ 7.22, so a 76/28 is 7.38 and a 76/29 is a 7.12....right there for gearing.

Big brute, that puts your final drive @ 9.35, sound like you may be overheating because of over-revving the motor for too long. Try upping the gears some to combat the thermalling.

I have a Havoc 17.5 system in my SC10 and it works great. I'm running a 75 spur & 26t (I think, may be a 25) pinion and the truck never gets too hot, even when running around 20 mins.
