Default Losi Plastic Spur gears on Eight E

Running 2200kv with a 12T Robinson and a 45T spur, have the esc at 80% and striped 2 spur gears. Made the 15min of qualifing then destroyed them both in the mains.

The spur is close to the aluminum tower, but other then that? Any ideas on how to correct this?

Steel. They are not as loud as people make them out to be.
You can get them in 45,46,48,50.

I agree with switching to steel, but that isn't the problem. You MUST have a mesh problem, either too tight or too lose. You should get a lot of life out of a plastic spur. I still prefer steel, but the nylon spur shouldn't wear out too quickly. Check your mesh....

Default mesh

I adjust it tight enough so the spur gear just moves. I'm going to start running steel, but just thought I'd check before I start destroying steel.

If it makes allot of noise, you have a problem. If not, you should be ok. I always set the lash relatively loose on my 8th scales. So far so good, I'm still on the very first nylon spur I installed, over 6 months ago.

I've got a whole season out of a plastic spur (a Kyosho on a Losi 8 diff) and am still running the same spur this year. Lots of other people get good results and long life with plastic spurs. Wonder why it never occurs to people that destroy stuff fast that it might be them that is doing something wrong?

Default My point exactly

I know they work, I've been running them in my other buggies for 6 months no problems. This buggy is chewing them up.

You've stated it maybe the operator, but haven't offered any ideas as to why they might fail??

Is your motor shaft still 90 degrees from the spur? I'm starting to think maybe you had a hard landing and the motor shifted, or maybe a mounting screw came loose...

Other than the obvious, having good mesh, I would say that if you're direct drive, 2200kv (assuming 4s) is a fairly hot setup, and quite a bit of pressure to be putting on that plastic spur. Steel, Sliperential, etc, are the directions I would look in.

Very good insight there.

Default Thanks

I'll check into that. I haven't touched it since the race, so hopefully I'll be able to see what happened.

A 4-cell 2200kv and with a 12tooth and a 45 spur is a hot set up? I guess I better go steel, its only going to get hotter from here!

No, there are plenty of people who will go even hotter, you're right about that. But the force being put through spur/pinion, especially direct drive, is going to be pretty fierce. Instant torque, and twice the weight of tenth scale, is pretty intense. If any link is weaker/softer, it's bound to snap.

Myself, I'll take the extra noise. Just wish I had the option to run a slipper...

I have at least 10 11.1 volts through my 8ight conversion and have yet to have anny issues. I'm running a 13T pinion and have ran up to a 16 powerd by a Novak 6.5.

I have still never stripped a plastic spur gear in all the racing and bashing I have done with electric 1/8 buggy and truggy.... unless the motor moves and makes the gear mesh real loose. That has happened a couple times. Otherwise, never stripped one out... even when running a stupid fast bashing setup.

Gear mesh is the key. I have destroyed one kyosho spur in my 8ight within 5 minutes, due to less than 2 mm of play between the teeth. My other kyosho spur has lasted for 6 months and is still going strong with almost no play between the teeth.

i haven't had my 8ights all that long, but i haven't had any issues yet with them stripping. my way is just to get a hair of wiggle between the 2 gears. just enough for it to rock between the teeth and that's all.
