Diff adjustment on a T4/B4
 
So I just got done rebuilding my diffs on both my T4 and B4. Now, I remember in the instructions it said to tighten the diff screw all of the way down then back it off 1/8 of a turn. When I do that I that my diff seems WAY too tight. I have found that with it set at the recommended level I cannot turn worth a damn, especially on the sweeper we have at the track I run at. I loosen it up like another turn and a half and I seem to be able to make that sweeper a lot better.

Does this sound right or am I imagining this? How loose is too loose for a diff? How will I know if I have gotten it too loose, i.e. what warning sounds/signs will I hear/see?

Please correct me if I am hallucinating:)

A loose diff will "bark" under load. Either acceleration or landing jumps. If your diff is too tight at the suggested setting, then you probably did something wrong during the build. Things to check, did you compress the spring with something (pliers, vice, etc) before assembly? Did you properly break the diff in? Did you tighten it so much the the ears on the t-nut are pushed up? By this I mean when you tighten the diff, you are only supposed to tighten it until the ears of the t-nut are flush with the bottom of the outdrive slots, you have to watch as you tighten the diff to make sure, as you can continue to tighten it past this point. Also I have seen a couple of people build them backwards, putting the spring under the thrust bearing instead of under the t-nut. This will cause horrible diff action.

Bingo, bango!! That was my problem. I could have sworn that I saw it with the spring on the thrust bearing side in the Manual. Guess not!!

Maybe now I can reach Cav/Maifield status!!!
