I am advising a newcomer to the club the benefits of upgrading tires for overall buggy performance.
He has a Desert Gator, Tamiya DT-02 chassis.
It goes around the track quite well, but i am sure it would cut faster laps
with softer tires as the kit tires are very hard.

I would have recommended Jconcepts double dees on the rear and Jconcepts groovy ribbed tires on the front, which is what i use at the moment.
But i can't find wheels made for the DT-02 that would fit these 2.2 size tires.

So to my actual question. . .

I have found that 3Racing make a complete wheel and tire set for the DT-02, and the DB-01.
Does anyone know what sort of compound the tires are ????
Surely it must be softer at least than the hard kit tires ??

I have a set of 3Racing wheel and tire set for my DF-03 and the tires are harder then heck on those things! They are almost hard rubber. They don't hook up at all at the place I run my car, which is mostly hard packed high grip dirt...

The kit tires would probably be better but I'd definitely say that JC's and Proline's, and Losi's compounds are much, much better for running your car.

I run my 3Racing pair on the streets because they are a cheapie, "I don't care about them" set of wheel and tire set since their compound really suck.

The wheels are however, very stylish in my opinion

I would tell your friend to spend some extra dough and get a good set of tires. Tires in my opinion are 90% of the way your car will handle on the track in my opinion...

i agree with tom here, afterall, they are the only thing that is in contact with the track!

Here are some options for you:

First, Tamiya makes 2.2 wheels for DT-02. All you have to do is to find the part number 51205 (front) and 53881 (rear). Try those to see it will fit the prolines. My source told me that it would.

Second, back in the day, all Tamiya racers used to switch the front knuckles with the AE one to use standard size wheels and it would have fit in place without much modification. If you have a spare, try it on his car to see if it still the case. If it is, you can put Jconcepts wheel and tires on it just the way your recommended. As far as the rear end, you can put Kyosho Rear wheels on it. It uses hex hubs just like Kyoshos.

Or, you can mod Kyosho's RB5 front C-hubs to fit into DT-02's front arms so you can use Kyosho Rims all around. It's abit more work and pretty pricey but it will work.

Or...you better off having the kid save off some $$$ to buy him a new car that is going to work better for him like either team AE B4 or Kyosho RB5.
