B4...lipo or not? (setup questions)
Ok, so I have an Associated B4 on the way. I was considering getting throwing a 2s lipo in it and a 5700kv mamba max. Now, my question is this….how fast would this thing be? I have an 18T with a 6800kv sidewinder, and 2s lipo, and it is RETARTED fast. Even when I use an 8.4v NiMh pack, it’s still REEALLY fast, almost too fast for racing.
So I’m trying to figure out WHICH Mamba to get for my B4, and if I should just stick with a good NiMh, or get a 2s lipo. But if I go lipo, I don’t want an overpowered Mamba. I’d like to keep the car on the track So, I need to find a happy medium…I need either a mild mamba/lipo or a hotter mamba/nimh….any suggestions on a good setup? Which Nimh packs would you recommend for longest runtimes, etc.?

I have a B4 with lipo and a 4600 motor. It has more power than I can drive right now.

The 5700kV is overkill, the car is too light. You should read/post in this thread as there are plenty of B4's with Lipo.

Sounds like I should just go with a 4600kv and a 7.2 nimh huh? I don't want to do to this what I did with my RC18T. I created a monster with my 18T, it's so fast, I have to figure out how to tame it down so I can race it. I want a setup that is all USABLE power, but it still fast....not excessive unusable power.

on my indoor/tight track a 10.5 w/ a hot pack, in truck or buggy pulls faster laps than a mod motor... mainly causes it's much more drivable...faster it not always faster! "Usable" is the key!

I'm thinking I'm gonna go with the 4600kv, a nimh with big capacity mah-wise, and some modest gearing. I think I should have some good power, but be able to keep things under control. Whatcha think? I don't think Lipo is going to be necessary....

I went through the same learning curve that you are going through right now. I started with the 18T mamba 6800 combo and it was too fast for me to race also. I have a b4 with a CC 5700 in it and I run a 2 cell lipo. I find that with so much power it's hard to keep the rear planted and the rear tires from becomming pizza cutters. I am by no means an experienced racer and maybe someone with more skill could drive this set-up fast. I have started setting the speed control to it's lowest settings with as much punch control as I can get and its getting better, time will tell. I just rebuilt the diff and am running it loose to try and put more usable power to the ground.

Correct! That is where I am. I am 26 and haven't raced in 10 years. So I am just getting back into with a more mature mentality. It's all about the tortise and the hare. I just so happen to want a fast tortise if that makes any sense. I want to do my B4 the RIGHT way and make it fast, with USUABLE power, but be able to keep it under control on the track with my "rookie" skills.

Castle Creations is NOT a good racing speed control!
Novak, Tekin,or LRP . Usable controllable power is what you want.
Look around at race results, Who wins with a mamba?

You know, on 2nd thought. I would say that is an almost unaccurate statement. Granted it's your opinion, and you are entitled to it, I don't see any problem with getting a Castle setup, proper gearing, battery setup, and maybe even the Castle Link and setting this thing up to where I can make it work just fine. I think anyone with patience and a little knowledge can make it work, as long as I don't get carried away.
