Making my own shock towers
#17
Thanks for all the help guys. Im gonna get a few sample pieces and test them out. Looks like I will try the G-10 and some derlin. I will post pics of the outcome. Damn I wish this week was not my dreaded holiday travel everywhere I don't want to go week

i would go for G10 or delrin.
carbon fiber looks good but for track performance its no better.
g10 is cheap, and has a higher stress point than carbon fiber, so it will hold up alot better. delrin also has more flex.
cant really understand why carbon fiber is used when making shock towers, especially in off road.. its strong, but with the small pieces we use, its just not big enough to have any flex, so it will break direct if you crash hard. and the weight compared to g10 and delrin is not really that much either
chassis and topdecks etc are another story though..

Just remember if you make the shock tower too strong you will end up breaking a $50 chassis!
I really don't find my XXX-4 G+ all that fragile... Yeah it does break if you smack a wall or take a bad tumble or something... But if you are landing on all fours.. well.. it's fine. Mod is what 4wd is all about.. and it will break just about anything if you "oops".
The only thing that drives me nuts is if I have to use a roll pin for the front or rear axles.. they will break within a few runs!

Long time ago when I raced BMX, they used to make 5-spoke bike wheels out of Zytel. It would probably be a good composite for RC.

delrin is what the old bj4 arms were made out of.. they were pretty strong

Delrin towers sound good to me. The stock G+ towers break too easily and cost too much. Let us know what you come up with.
