Default rear wheel guards and carbon fiber shock tower ???

Just curious what the purpose is of having the rear wheel guards i see on some of the truggies and buggies

also...what are the pro's and con's on using the carbon fiber front and rear shock towers??,like this...
i'd like to cut some weight on my crt x2....but are they strong enough also ?....thanks for the advice

dirt guards just stop the dirt from sand blasting the polished shock shafts all to hell..and they look like trick...

carbon shock towers are pretty tough...i never broke one on my RC8 and it landed upside down more then a few times...i imagine if you crash hard enough to break one, it would of bent a aluminum one anyways
