I ran across some new trinity D5/D6 series mod motors in the 10-8 turn range at some really good closeout prices. the thing is, i've been out of the rc scene for about 5 years now. Are they still competitive against the latest mods and brushless for 4wd offroad racing?

what wind would be best for 4x4 racing?

Competitive? Sure! Just a whole lot of work... Anything under a 13 turn brushed motor takes a lot of maintenance.. You will need to cut it every 3 or 4 runs.. if you have a lathe and everything.. then sure.. go for it!

I used to run a 12x2 as my fav brushed for 4wd... If the D5 & D6 use the P94 series brush and you can get a hold of the XXX LeMans brushes (retailed for around $15 a set) then you might not have to cut the comm so often.. maybe every 5 or 6 runs. I used to be able to get through a whole motor on just 2 sets of these running every weekend.

Honestly though.. having had a brushless in my 4wd for the last several months... it's way easier... I run a 7.5 and most folks at my local track like a 6.5... It makes life a whole lot easier! That and LiPos.. just charge and go.. and go.. back to back

Brushless stuff simply lets you do much less work. Brushed motors are still prefered by alot of racers that don't mind doing the work.

i'm still running brushed in 2 & 4WD & i'm not losing out to anyone on power

BUT i'm very busy looking after them all day while the brushless guys can socialise more. the 9t in the B44 needs a skim every 2 runs or it goes off really badly. the 12t in 2wd can probably go 4 runs between skims

if you got a lathe & the patience to look after your motors then brushed isn't a problem. especially if you get them for a really good price

those d6s are tough motors.. i would def say they are competitive.. i still have several brushed motors that i would run in a heartbeat if needed

oh i need a lath? hmm.. i didn't know that. the reason i was interested was becasuw i could get them new for $20 a piece.

it's been a while since i was in rc. sorry for the newbish question. i forgot what the term single, double, tripple and quad ? what is the difference? is a certain amound of winds better for top end speed vs low end?

And to echo what has been said above - silver brushes will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. I was cooking motors left right and centre until I switched to them (I use the Much-More ones but there are a few brands that supply them, you know they are the ones if they are about 3 times the price of the other pairs of brushes). For me, there is no rush to switch to brushless with this setup - plenty of power, reasonable maintenance, I can arrive at a race meeting with the motor prepped and not have to do anything to it all day.

would a 8 turn single work well for 4x4 offroad? it would be punchy right?

also forgive me for getting of topic but what do you think of the GM V12Xc world champ edition esc? i can get one new in the box for mega cheap. what do you think of it?
