Default Stampede XL-1 Upgrade choices

Hi everyone - I just bought an electric stampede from craigs list and I thought it was an XL-5 but turned out to be an XL-1. This isnt such a bad thing because it is for a 7 year old but even so, it is slow.

After realizing we wanted more speed we went to the LHS and bought a trinity 17t modified motor and a 23 tooth pinion gear and that definately livened it up a bit.

My question is this...At the time we are running the car on two basic 1500mah nicd 7.2v 6cell batteries. Would we get more speed from a NIMH battery - How about 9.6v...can the motor handle more voltage? How do cells mix into the situation? Are they just for run time or is performance affected as well? Lastly, how much top end speed would I get off changing out the spur gear?

FYI the motor is a Trinity Speed Gem Pro Amber 17 Turn Double Modified Motor - 9254 as seen here http://www.ehobbies.com/tri9254.html

Thanks guys - Sorry if my questions are noob-like questions, im new to the electric area - I personally have a nitro rustler and 4-tec as this is for my fiance's son.

Thanks again

First I thank your gearing is way too high for the pede and a 17 turn. Something more like 15 to 16 t pinion size would be more like it. With your gearing and higher MAH packs (longer run times) your going to run into heat problems.

You will see a huge run time increase over your 1500 packs with a nice new NIMH pack with a high MAH.

A few place's to find alot of good info on the Stampede. I love the truck so feel free to ask away. I will help with what I can..... These 3 site contain tons on top of tons of info on the Stampede.

Just get a 7.2v battery with 5000 mAh and you'll run like a champ! or check the motor/battery/gearing setups chart - there's a few setups with orion motor, and others as well.

gearing is way too high for the pede and a 17 turn. Something more like 15 to 16 t pinion size would be more like it.
I bought the motor from my LHS and the guy their said he has a 21t pinion and a 23t pinion but he recommends the 23t so I dont get to hot on the motor...lol now I hear the opposite. Im lost...I know little of gearing...I have the stock spur gear but it is worn a bit as the car is old so I am gonna replace it - what should I do? Replace the spur alone and keep the 23t pinion or replace both or what? I am definately upgrading to something like a 3000 or 4000mah nimh battery and I dont want to burn up the motor...any suggestions?

Because of the Stampedes larger tires most have found that the gearing tends to need to be 2t to 3t under the turn of the motor your using. So for a 17turn motor you will want a 14, 15, or 16 tooth pinion. I run a 16 turn motor with 15 tooth pinion, 90 tooth spur, and 4500mah packs. My motor is just hot enough at the end of the run. I let the motor cool then run it agin.

Default 15t...

Will running a lower pinion reduce top speed? if so can I use a diff. spur to increase it or will this do the same as increasing the teeth on the pinion.

Also, I ran it around the kitchen today just to warm it up and see if it got hot and as the motor was cool the esc and wires coming off it were really hot - I noticed a cut in the ground wire coming off it but after I let it cool and I re-taped it - it got just as hot - is this because im running the xl-1 esc or could it be something else - I didnt notice this heat in other runs - just around the kitchen

Thanks again

P.S The goal here is to make an ok accelerating but stronger top end stampede using if possible the xl-1 esc

Thanks guys

-Stephen

Default Also...

Also, it was said that I want to down gear the motor - is this only an issue when I upgrade the batteries or should i do this now?

(The motor doesnt seem to get too hot)

-Thanks again

what kind of connector is on the battery & esc? the tamiya connectors will heat up pretty quick if that is what you have. better batteries will increase run times which is when you need to watch the heat more.

Default traxxas connectors

What benefits would I get if I upgraded to the newer traxxas connectors and if I did would I have to get a charger that uses them or could I solder one on their?
