I like this one from Venom...other companies also sell the exact same charger but with different colors/cases.

It can do NiMH, Lipo, A123 (Lithium Nano), etc...

It balances Lipo and A123 also.

It even has a cool interface for monitoring, graphing and saving all the parameters on a PC.

Many (including me) like the Duratrax ICE or Checkpoint nearly identical version. It does NiCD, NiMH, LiPo plus engine break-in, stepped charging, and has a temperature probe to prevent overcharging. I've had an ICE for almost three years with heavy use and have been very happy with it

will charge everything but lead acid and gel cell....

that being said ice ice baby common ...i love mine...if you dont want to hassle with the power supply ...try a superbrain 989 ...for all the things people say about them ...i have a 977 and it has never failed ...if they just didnt have those stupid green connectors ....and the 989 has a power supply mode that you can use to bring lipos back to life if you discharge them below minimum voltage ....

I use an Ice charger and have been happy with it. After I started getting more involved with lipos, I realized I needed a separate balancer to use with the Ice to charge and balance my lipos, so when or if your son starts into them, you'll need a balancer to add to the Ice.

I wanted a balancing charger that would charge and balance at the same time. I added a Hyperion 0610i as a 2nd charger to handle lipos and charge the second pack for my EMaxx so I don't have to wait.

The Venom Pro is a balance charger and seems to have pretty decent reviews - rcgroups in their battery/charger thread.

Triton ZX should be a good choice, but they put off the shipping date again and again

not really worried about that, they never really go out of balance when i check them. I am sure you make or buy the proper lead.
