Default RPM pinions any good? (6 pack starter sets)

Correction...Robinson Racing not RPM

I sold my 48 pitch pinions long ago....now I will be needing some again. RPM's any good?

RRP1055 Starter Pinion Set. It includes six pinions (15T, 17T, 19T, 21T, 23T, and 25 Tooth)
Robinson Racing RRP1050 Starter Pinion Set. It includes six pinions (16T, 18T, 20T, 22T, 24T, and 26 Tooth).

I may have a 16 & 20 laying around new, so I was thinking the odd set would be my best bet.

This would be in a Losi Speed-T converted to run off-road with the 4800kv motor. Truck comes with a 88T Spur....

They work fine.. I've had a set for a few years.. they are a little lighter than the Losi pinions and are a bit better in quality too.

Default RobinsonRacing pinions any good?

If that is your question then the answer is yes. They are believed to be the best in the business by most. Cheers!

Default Losi

Losi have worked out far better for me, I just gave away all my robinsons after 8 months.

Thanks for the replies....I just wanted to make sure they were not super soft or perhaps something else out there that I would not have to piece together....

Robinson are my personal favorites. Seem to fit better with a variety of brand spur gears, and they don't wear down like some.

Which Robinsons? Don't they make several versions?

I've also had better luck with Losi, regarding running concentric/consistent gear mesh, and wear. Perhaps I've gotten the wrong Robinsons?

EDIT: I'm not bashing Robinson, I've just had better experience with Losi, ~20 years of use on many. I just recently bought a couple more Robs because that's what the shop had. (17.5 bl, gear it to the moon!)

You are looking at more money, but I would go with the Absolute Robinson Racing Pinions, they have never let me down and run very true providing the spur is true.

Robinson makes both aluminum and steel pinions. I dont like the aluminum ones but have been using hte hardened steel ones with good results for a long time now.

I also have the Robinson Racing starter pinion sets and they are excellent value for money. They perform well enough and they last. I'm still using them up to this day.

The only downside with the set I got more than a year ago was they had no marking for the number of teeth.

Also, since they're made from steel, you have to take care they don't get rust by periodically spraying them with WD40.

My experience of the pinions in the 6-packs has been different than other people's. I have tried to run them in off-rod trucks and they wind up getting nicked, dented and worn by the small particles that work past the gear cover.

The Robinsons in the six packs are about the softest steel pinions I have ever owned. The only one softer is the pinion that that comes stock on the Traxxas Slash. The Robinson pinions that are sold individually appear to be tougher steel (or maybe its the plating that makes them last longer).

I now use mostly Losi pinions.

I test pinions with a file on the shank where the setscrew goes in. The six-pack robinsons are so soft it is like dragging cheese over a grater. Losi pinions are not marked or worn at all by a file. That shows up in very long life for both the pinion and the spur. When a pinion starts to wear because of stuff getting in it or damaging the teeth it starts to take out the spur.

I have gone a whole season on the same Traxxas spur (old style) and Losi pinion in an outdoor loose dirt oval with no gear cover. I only changed the spur because I thought 1 year was enough on it, but I didn't need to change the pinion.

Yeah the aluminum Robinson pinions are very soft and simply don't last long at all. The steel ones are OK--not great IMO. The cast (not machined) Losi pinions seem to give longer life and run much quieter. They are also like $3 each. Go Losi.

I bought the Robinson Starter packs and found they get chewed up offroading. My Losi's I replaced them with still look brand new after the same amount of running. I used the Robinson packs to experiment with gearing and once I settled on the range I wanted I bought the Losi's.
