Default Traxxas Slash Brushless Upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade the Slash to brushless. We don't have any Slash racing class or rules so this is for my own performance thus rules do not apply. I am wondering which motor/ESC combo I should use for maximum performance using Lipo. I thought about using the Traxxas VXL package like in the Rustler but now I am wondering if going to a 550 based motor would give me more performance than the VXL 540. Any suggestions ? Thanks.

I have a Castle Creation Mamba Max 5700KV system in mine and it rocks.

42Mph with a 2 cell lipo and I got right at 50mph with a 3 cell.

I have read that the Mamba Max 5700 and the Velineon motor make an awesome combo!!

Thanks for the input guys. Problem now is I am hearing rumblings about Associated coming out with a CORR truck. So, now I think I am gonna sit back and see what the market produces before I invest in Slash upgrade. Decisions, decisions.

lol

your not really investing in the slash if your gonna buy a motor and esc combo for it....

just go for it! and if you like the associated truck more than the slash then sell your slash... and take that brushless system and put it in the associated truck!

The associated CORR truck is called the SC8, it is a 1/8th scale nitro buggy with slash style wheels/tires and CORR body. You can watch videos of it running here:

If you use a Mamba max motor be prepared for short run times due to motor heat. The Slash is 50% heavier than a T4 or TA05 etc which is the sort of cars the Mamba motors are designed for. Get the Mamba max speedy then run a VXL motor or better yet a Medusa 4 pole brushless, those things are insane and run cool!

its interesting you say this as i was running a mamba max 7700 in my slash and had it getting hot all the time and was only getting 15mins to a 5000 lipo. the 7700 has now died as i assume it was overworked with alot of wheelspin, and you saying they generally run hot. what motor do you guys recommend for a slash basher. i want it pretty quick but reliable not to worry about it burning out all the time. im runnin 18/86 gearing in it too. i was looking at the LRP eraser series 9.5T
http://www.lrp.cc/en/products/electr...turns/details/
or the LRP vector 6.5t
http://www.lrp.cc/en/products/electr...turns/details/
the vector if i wanted it a little faster.. but the erasers are 2/3 the price..
im just concerned about getting another high rpm motor and having it overpower the car and burn out again. i keep seeing all these vids on utube of people thrashing slashs harder then i did and not having heat issues like me...

thanks
chris

I don't have the problem you mention with my Mamba. I usually get bored before the battery dies and temp on the motor is ~170, battery and ESC just warm, no need to check with temp gun.
I'd say play with gearing (run 14/90 on mine, may try a 16 pinion next week) and the Castle software to keep stuff under control.

Hi all,
I'm using lrp and neo one, lost the neo to heat. I miss the speed, theres a 7.5 vector in it for now, just a little faster then stock set up. I believe I'll find the right combo sooner or latter with the lrp and a new vector motor, I think the castil would be a good setup thou.

are LRP motor's generally good quality? how does the 7.5 go in the slash? is it pretty quick? hows it go heat wise. im just worried i wont be happy with the speed of the 9.5 coming from a MM7700, and should invest in a 6.5 or so. just there is a $50 price difference...

what would a MM5700 be rated at approx... 8.5t?

The vector 7.5 motor I'm using for now is just a hair faster than stock. No prob. with heat, much better run times than stock, this is a good set up for any one too convert to brushless without worry. lrp speed o's are really good stuff, I like them over novak . Thay seem to be more reliable.
