I always seem to have issues with "playing catch up". I can hold people off and am comfortable in the lead, but as soon as someone makes a pass I feel as though I need to be be seconds faster than them.
(traffic is another problem. Sometimes I catch myself trying to race with somebody just in front/behind me that may be a lap down)

Reading threads on RCTech instead of going to the track and practicing!
Had to say it.
Being serious though, I've worked the last year or so on the fact that I tend to ignore my set-up and try to drive better, when in fact a few choice adjustments make a world of difference to the, and thus make it easier to drive.

my biggest problem is leading a main. During qualifiers it's not an issue, but during the main I start trying to take lines too tight and trying to downside jumps perfect to stay as smooth as possible , it usually bites me in the tail end and I end up stuffing an inside tube or casing a downside of a jump. Another issue I have is second guessing my gut instinct as far as tire choice , or making slight tuning changes.

I enjoy changing a car thats working perfectly well until it doesn't work anymore. I also make a habit of getting all nice and excited after warmup, before my race starts so I crash in the first turn and blow my run, then I drive 5 times harder to try to make up the time and crash some more. Thats how I justify sucking anyway.

I have found that the easiest way to run a great race day is to do what the fast guys do. There are afew things that are key to a fast car.
1-clean it, find the cleanest ride & do what ever the owner does to his car to your car.
2-setup your car to be very fast. If there is a car on the track doing things that your car can't do then figure out how to make your car do those things.
3-watch the other heats & figure out the lines you can't take. There are alot of lines that will be effective, but when you find bad lines they are very noticeable.
4-get that adrenaline flowing and those nerves cracking. If you get nervous up there on the stand then just keep racing untill you realize that you got to spend your day playing with toy cars instead of mowing the grass.
5-find a radio that fits you. Some people want something that will practicly drive itself w/ gaudy throtle & steering inputs that just need a quick blip so something like an m-8 is perfect. Some people want very precise control so something with more movement is desired like a 3-pk.

I don't practice much before the dasy of the race and sometimes don't go out at all til the first heat at least when at my local track. The other thing is I don't push my car as hard as I could because I rather run smoothly than wreck. I aim for consistancy than that one or two fast laps. I have been doing that in touring and now offroad and most of the time it works great but at bigger races I need to push harder for the faster times.

I have been racing for 25+ years and I still am unable to change positions on the driver's stand. Once I am locked into a spot, even moving one position left or right makes driving very difficult.
