Default Motors

I am new to this hobby and I bought a Stampede. It looks like I might need a motor. Any suggestions on which type to get? What do the "turns" mean. how can i know i am getting a powerful one?

the lower number of turns the faster the motor will be . Check with your instructions first because I`m sure there is a limit to how low of a turn you can go with stock ESC .

Not sure how old it is, but the newer Stampedes came with 12T motors and that's the limit of how few turns your XL5 speed control can handle - the older XL1 speedos were 18T. Any replacement motor with 12 or more turns should work in your truck.

That would be the ideal choice if you want a reliable fast motor.

The traxas 12t motors are not based on a 540 motor size
Which means the speedo can only handle a 17t motor (540 size) max
You will be safe with a 19t
Really anything lower and bye bye to your speedo

i was confused about the number of turns. So I guess you are saying that a 17 turn 540 motor draws more and is faster than a 12 turn 550 motor?

550 silver cans draw more than 540 ones, but a stock or modified 540 will draw a huge amount more.

We've successfully put a hot 12T double 540 in a Rustler to replace the 550 cans before and the speedo survived but it did get pretty warm. As a precaution though, I'd probably stick with a higher turn, maybe 15 or above.

For the type of running you will probably do with a pede and the time you will run add in the weight and the large tires, you will have a hard time gearing low enough for anything less than a good 19 turn. You have to remember though, that a "spec" 19 like the money or the komodo are really race motors. They are fixed at 24 degrees and not really designed to push a heavy monster truck up and down rough hills--I went through a BUNCH of hot motors when I had a Stampede. Get a "mild" machine wound 15-17 turn motor that you can adjust the timing on--it will last longer than a spec 19 or a hot stock motor like a CO27. Get something rebuildable.

ok i went to my local hobby shop where i bought the truck. For $45 bucks he has a 19 turn modified motor (not sure of the brand) he said it would blow away the stock motor. Or for $170 i can upgrade to the whole velinion brushless motor and speed controller. I dont have alot to spend but do you guys think i should go with the velinion?

Here is a few good motors for you stampede , they have good torque and plenty of power .

There are many other manufactures that have great motors but these are best bang for the $ . Especially that the Intense motors are on sale .

I`m old school and prefer brushed motors , but you will get more performance , longer runtimes , and less maintenance with brushless .

If you don't mind spending the money--any of the brushless systems are fine for bashing. Mamba Max. Sidewinder, Novak GTB, LRP Sphere, Velineon, Speed Passion. I would go with one of the cheaper ones. For a Stampede you really can't go wrong with the Velneon. You will have more fun for longer with far less maintenence with a brushless system. That alone will help you enjoy this hobby alot more.

Brushed motors served their purpose well but are going the way of the dodo bird. Brushless/lipo is the future--and for good reason.

If you want minimal maintenance and can afford it, go with the Velineon system. We haven't run them - I'm still a brushed motor guy - but many run them at our track and really like them. They all have lots of top end but not much grunt so I'd suggest gearing it way down for long-life bashing, especially with those big tire's on the stampede.
