Does the New Novak HV ESC have a thermal shut off built in? I thought I was having issues with my Rx(sr3000) because after about 3 or 4 minutes the buggy would loose throttle and steering for 2-3 seconds and come back. I am pretty sure the Esc did not get over 140. I also tried bypassing the smart stop just in case the my batt. voltage dropped but it still shut off. All led's are still on but no steering and no throttle. I changed Rx, had the same problem. Anyone have any insight as to what the problem is here.
novak is the only one that has thermal on the motor and esc. i belive it is 200 before it stops working.
I will be testing my buggy again this weekend in 90 degrees outside temps with the 7.5, 12 pinon and 48 spur. I will let everyone know how it did on temps. later
OK, that sounds what the problem is. Is the futaba fast system having these problems.
No, the Futaba system is soo much better than the spektrum. I had the original spektrum and it lost signal under hard acceleration and it also glitched and would loose its bind every now and then. I switched to the Futaba and have had no problems at all. however spektrum has claimed to have fixed the problems with their newer systems.

All I can say is WOW! I put a spectrum capacitor on the Rx($6), had no problems at all. Running the Novak conversion with a 5.5 and 11t and has plenty of top end and more than plenty on the bottom. Its about 95 degrees here in north texas and I did get the Esc up to about 160, motor never got over 130. My battery is a little on the small side, Losi 14.8v 4cell 2200mah I used to run in my starter box. I got about 6 minutes before it started to Weaken but I still got a good 8 minutes. It temped at 140 so I will be getting a bigger battery for longer run times as well. All in all I am extremely happy so far.
BAD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Went to the track this morning and was ready to test some more. Last week I ran a two minute test of settings on radio, esc, etc. Then I ran a four minute practice and a five minute practice; no issues except motor fan mounting broke. Today I again ran a two minute test to make certain everything was in place and working properly. Then I went out for what I hoped to be another five minute practice to evaluate the on track performance and any heat issues.
On the second lap, while taking a slow turn the buggy started making a horrible noise. It sounded like the motor moved and the pinion and spur were off. I stopped immediately and took it to pits to examine. Here is the BAD NEWS, a piece about the size of a nickel broke off the end of the rotor. This was rubbing inside the motor. I know the rotor is ruined; but I don't know what damage may have been done to the inside of the motor. All this with less than fifteen minutes of run time. Buggy has not been abused in any way. I will call Novak Monday and make arrangements for warranty repair since I have had it less than a month. Good news no offroad race next weekend so I have some time to fix it.
Thanks I appreciate that. Do I e-mail him direct charlie@novak.com? I will try to check the website and see if there is a link listed.
I hated this, because the car was really cooking. When I went outside to test it the first time, everyone in the hobby shop (pits) came out. The general reaction was "you gotta be kidding", "freaking fast", "wow". Now I am anxious to get it going again.
I assume I will need to remove the large heat sink from the motor before I send it in? Will I get new thermal grease with the new motor? Thanks again.
Check with him before you disassemble the motor and HS, you may only need to replace the rotor. If you need to re-install the HS, we will send you one of these:
Sounds great. I don't really know how to tell if the inside of the motor was damaged. The rotor was turning and that was the noise I heard. The broken part hitting inside the chamber where the rotor is. I will discuss with Charlie. Thanks again for being so on top of this.
