What to buy, Truck or Buggy ??
Hi all,
Just want to get some info on which type of nitro car is best for the following conditions; * Offroad racing amongst friends * Better for begginers * Better handling * More enjoyment * 2WD or 4WD ?? Any info will be greatly appriciated !! Cheers, oz |
I would go with a 2wd 1/10th scale truck like a rc10gt. There is talk about a secong gt coming out, but that could be for a long time. I think the losi xxxnt handles better but breaks easier and i think its harder to work on. The gt is fairly durable and handles fairly decent. Good luck just remember to have fun.

2WD is more popular ?
Why arnt there too many 4wd models out there ? also ,, there is no point in trying to race a Monster truck ahh ? |
i wouldn't say theres no point... people race Tmaxx's and savages alot. tmaxx's have their own racing catergory. can go about 40mph or more i believe...
|
You can race a monster truck. I was thinkig about getting an emaxx to race at an electric only track that im helping to get going. If your local track doesnt have a monster truck class they would probably have one if there were enough of them. I wouldnt start with a monster truck though.

so overall then .. a 2WD truck is the way to go ??
|
A 2wd truck such as the RC10GT is a good start, affordable and easy to maintain.
But for more fun, try the 1/8 th scale, 4wd monster trucks. Enjoy! |
It all depends on where you are as to what is more popular. Where I live 1/8th scale buggies are top dog.
Personally I prefer them. Theyre faster than a 1/10 scale truck, overall more durable and the 4wd makes them handle considerably better. So ya know I own a MP, 7 PBS, X-Factor, and RC10gt among others... |
I dont think 1/8th scale is something you just jump into. Yeah its more durable, but for a good setup youre looking well over a 1000$. Its alot for someone who doesnt have much experience with rc cars.

Theyre only $1000 if you insist on going overboard. For a beginner a RTR kit with a few upgrades isnt bad at all. As they learn to improve their driving skills they can easily upgrade.
Example: this is what I did... Hyper 7 RTR 399 if ya shop around. Sometimes you can now get a PBS for that price. New Stearing Servo (645 works well) $40 Upgraded Radio (inexpensive FM like Mag Jr) $100 or less if ya shop around. Failsafe is always good $20 Then as you have money pick up a throttle servo, starter box and maybe some lightweight goodies. Yes it's a basic setup but even with a starter box and 2nd servo for the throttle youve got $700 into it. $560 to get started isnt bad at all. I've whipped $1500 Kyosho's with that setup. Their buggy was probably better no doubt. But until you start racing at a higher lvl the buggy doesnt matter enough to worry about. By then you'll be getting another one anyway :) You are right tho. 1/10 trucks are cheaper. Add in a radio and you could prolly get started with a Losi or RC10GT RTR pretty much out of the box. So that's $400 or a bit less. But if ya add in the added repairs down the road I doubt you save much. |
I dont have one, and I'm no Nitro guy, but If I were you, I'd check out the XTM Xterminator. @ Hobby People they're only $400 RTR. Check it out here: http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/145601.asp
Or you could check out the XTM Xterminator Deluxe, I think it's like a racing package....i dunno.. thats like 100 more though... (in case the top link doesnt work, use the one below) http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/145601.asp |
1/8 buggy all the way
you could get a hyper 7 pbs for somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 rtr with starter box and everything 4wd is by far easier to drive and 1/8 buggies have got to be the most durable R/C cars on the planet i had a buggy and got a 1/10 truck and i dont like the truck very much at all it really requires alot of throttle control and i feel like i am working when i drive it a couple weeks ago for example i was at the trinity gas challenge and the A mains for truck and buggy were 40 minutes long and back to back during the truck main which was first my feet started hurting and i got to feeling kinda crappy while racing for that long but the 1/8 race that followed i felt great i was so busy racing and having fun i my feet didnt hurt and i felt great its just alot more fun |
cheap
I got my Hyper PBS on sale for $449.00 @ Ace Hardware Hobbies.
The man there si a terrific seller. |
you could try a HPI nitro MT
4wd an ok engine they can come RTR durable tons of hop ups capiable of becoming an onroad truck it might not be the best but it sure is fun |
