Holy crap I just exploded one of my Li-Po's. Im not sure how but I think that my Super Brain was on 5 cell instead of 2 cell. When I went to check on it as it was charging it was about 7 inches tall and all of the bags inside were seperated. I think I messed up........ LOL

Were you charging the Orion 4800 listed in your sig? Orion does not recommend using the MRC 989 with their LiPo's... Could you post a picture of what's left of your LiPo?

Aren't chargers supposed to check for the voltage associated with the cell count?

EX: KJ says he might have had 5-cell programmed on the charger. Well, "assuming" he also had Lipo on instead of Nimh/Nicd, shouldn't the charger check for around 16Volts (5 cell X 3.2V =16V)?

Yes I was charging the Orion via the MRC Super Brain. I dont have any pics. Also the charger did shut itself off when it blew unfortianatly it was too late.

this is why everyone should get a lipo bag some of the flames associated with lipo explosions are huge. lucky you and your home are ok

Well I've seen this happen at least 3 or 4 times in the last 6 months with lipos. I don't think this should scare anyone away from lipos because I've seen at least the same amount of nickle metal's blow up, if not more. Only once was the lipo failure violent, it popped open like this one above did and it was because when he pushed the rotating knob down to start the charging on his ICE, he accidentally turned the knob which changed it to a Nickle Metal setting. Even then, it just popped open, more loud than anything. But when the nickelmetal cells went, each time we were lucky nobody got hurt because the cells shoot like a bullet! I've seen a nickel metal pack explode just sitting by itself, not charging or anything. At one of the tracks I race at, lipos and Intellect 4200s are required to be in charging bags, and having the lipos in the bags isn't really enforced.

This apears to be user Error, not equipment failure. So lets not let this turn into a "Lipo vs. Nimh" thread.

What charger were you using? the 977 or the 989? i know the 989 has a safety feature, so that it wont charge a lipo below the minimum voltage it should have. EX, with my 989, it wont charge a lipo if its below 3v per cell.

I was using the 977. It was def user error. I had been charging the battery and stopped it mid charge by accident. When I started it back up I failed to check and make sure that all of the settings were still set correctly. Apparently if you hit the stop button it throws the charger settings off. Oops

I completely agree, I just didn't want someone skimming the thread and saying, there's goes another one of those dangerous lipos!! But yeah, I think all but one of the lipo failures I've seen have been user error as well, ..... well maybe they were all user error, does jumping a xxx4, with a soft lipo pack, off of a 20 foot nitro jump count as user error?!!

wow, i always was interested what could happen to a lipo if you charge it incorrectly.

Well this little blunder just cost me about $150 between the new battery and Li-Po bag.
