My old soldering gun just gave up and I need to get a new soldering tool.I'am thinking of getting one by hobbico part number hobr0776 seen it on towers web site.I mainly need it for soldering battery conectors such as the sermos or duratrax powerpoles or lite speed there all the same just different name.What I was wondering was will a 60 watt soldering Iron produce enough heat to do the job.thanks in advance.

Orange handled weller 40w soldering iron for under $20.00 bucks is awesome. No need to spend a benji on a hakko. Trust me i have like 4 grand in rc shit and race 2-3 times a week.

I don't have one myself, but was researching and found a lot of people (electronics guys, not necassarily RC) liked the SR976N, they also have a ton of other models, many around 40 to 50 bucks. A temperature / thermostatically controlled iron is a big help in my opinion. Not sure about the tip size, but look around their site, maybe call them, it looks like they have everything:

I have a beloved but dying Ungar, spent too much time doing research, ended up getting the Hakko 936 myself. Functionally it is a fabulous piece of kit, my only whine is the extra weight and separate holder, a little harder to pack than the mighty Ungar. And it's a $100 or so. But it is nice to use, can easily go WAY too hot, ya don't turn this baby all the way up. Some might like the separate holder, you can put it by your work and keep the power unit out of harms way.

Sorry, so busy yakking about our own stuff, except for RB Five, we really aren't answering your question.

I agree with RB, 40 watts or more is enough for general wiring. I've tried 20-30 watters, not enough in my experience for the size of wires I assume you are working on. 14-12 gauge lets say.

Battery bars are a little tougher, I would suggest that 60 watts are better for that. 40 will do, but generally have to be applied longer, getting more heat into these fairly sensitive cells.

So yeah, without knowing the actual iron you proposed, 60 watts should be enough power in my opinion.

But I still like being spoiled with thermo control, easier to control and get the right amount for each task, size of wires and such. But certainly not required to git r done.

Thanks to everyone for all your help.I think I will get the 60watt iron it is olny 6.99 canadian and I'm getting a car and all the other stuff I will need to out fit it so cash will be a little bit tight but should not be to tight.

You buying the hobbico 60w off tower, If so its a piece of Sheet....

you will be wasting time and money it wont work and will probably likely ruin your batterys. If you really want that one i sell you the one in my closet. Only used once..........
