I think that brushed is faster than 13.5 at most tracks in buggy, so the 17.5 is just gunna be slower than slow. The 13.5SS is 195 watts according to novak while the 17.5 is 130 watts. Your gunna lose a 3rd of the power so its going to be like running of 5 or even 4 cells. Fun!
Couldnt have said it better- "Fun" will be casing 5 foot doubles because the 17.5 couldnt clear it. "Fun" will also be searching for the most ridiculous matched packs to make the 17.5 run like a worn out Green Machine (to be "competitive").

I am also a Planet racer and can recall a couple months back when the field was about half and half, brushless to brushed, the guys winning were still the brushed guys.

Good example this past weekend during practice I was running my 13.5 against some of the other 27t brushed motors and was getting smoked down the straight. I had my 13.5 geared pretty high with a 26/78 and was still getting left on the straight by a good tuned brush motor.

What I think is pretty funny was in one of the posts the President of ROAR says that the reason they used the 17.5 over the 13.5 was to keep brushed around for another year and that they should have a pretty good advantage over the 17.5 in offroad.

Yea, the 17.5 will be like running a Lathe Motor. This pisses me off
I think that the 17.5 is probably not bad in onroad, and I dont see why they cant make the 13.5 the offroad stocker and the 17.5 the onroad model. Ridiculous

I think the over all goal was to slow the classes down not that anyone here wants to hear that but by 2009 the classes will be as follows

17.5 for stock
13.5 for super stock
mod

but for the rest of this year it will be

17.5/27t stock
10.5/13.5/19t
mod

Now I do think these rules favor on-road a bit where speeds are getting nutz at times depending on where you go.

Off-road always seems to march to it's own drum atleast at races that are not roar races so it should be fun to see if the rules actually stay as they have been made.

Again ROAR is recommending local tracks to keep doing what they are doing and of course the 13.5 will have it's own class that I am sure you guys will not mind what few 27 turn brushed motors are left around is OK to race with you, so let them race with you instead of racing in a small class of only 2 or 3 of them.

ROAR is trying to save you guys with 13.5s at your local track the expense of buying new motors by recommending the local tracks keep doing what they were doing. Now if you are going to a Nat or Regional race you might want to buy a 17.5 or I like the idea of the 10.5 in the 19 turn class better.

I have found this to be true at my local track

If the 17.5 is slower than 27t then the effect will be continuing poor attendance at big events for the stock class. By next year I expect they'll change the rules again to be 17.5 for stock and 13.5 for superstock (as previously outlined).

The only mixed limited class I have seen was a 19t/10.5 brushed class and the motors seemed dead even on a smaller high bite offroad track.

If you are unhappy with the speed of the 17.5, step up to the next faster class.

Well, at our local track, we have a very competitive stock class- a lot of speed and very close, competitive racing- The reason a lot of us run stock. We will continue to run the 13.5 there, as ROAR has suggested 'stick to what works at your track'. The only issue with this is the fact that some (not all) tracks try to follow ROAR rules. Which means when I run at these tracks its back to the brushed technology (or the 17.5). I really dont see the 17.5 doing anything up against a nicely tuned 27t brushed motor. I guess it is a good thing I did not sell my lathe. And regarding myself moving up to another class, I already run 4wd mod, if 2wd mod was a consistent large-group racing class at our track, I would be running that!

I think part of the consideration for what to go with was the whole slow the classes down thing, but I want to know from those who have run a 17.5, how does it compare at your club to a tuned 27T motor?

Talking 17.5!

Well tomorrow i'm going to try a smaller pinion like a 26.But what i have now comes out of the hole pretty damn good!

Their is no way a well tuned stocker can keep up with a 13.5ss,i've been doing this for about 8 years now and tuned stockers to the max never had one pull like the 13.5.

But what we will get out of a 17.5 better run times, making it better to have longer mains! my.o2 cents!

At our local track when the 17.5 first show up it was around the holidays and I mist a couple of weekend, but keep in touch with the guys running, and yes at first they said they where slower I did some math & gearing at home with their input and I have been their 3 times with my 17.5 and I have been out driven ( by better drivers ) but I don't ( think ) I have been beeten down the straight away I like my 17.5,just my 2 cents

Axiom Jacob and myself both competed in the Roar Region 5 race at Summit Raceway using brushed motors. In a separate class, they ran the 13.5 'stocks'. The laptimes were very close, with the Brushed motors actually having the fastest lap times. Summit is a large outdoor electric track that really requires horsepower. In their outdoor state champs race, the winner and 3rd place finisher was a brushed motor (out of at least 15 drivers). If you are drag racing down a long street, yes, the 13.5 might be quicker, but if you are on a track, the difference is miniscule from what I have seen on various tracks.

Thanks for the info.

The those concerned about what it means at there local track where they run 13.5s for the "stock" class, why not just call it super stock then? Seems in reality its just more of a semantics thing at that point locally. Only issue arises of course when you go to another track, and if they don't run the super stock class, instead just stock, then you got an issue I agree.

I think the ones who will be most effected assuming the track follows ROAR rules is next year the 10.5s will be lumped in with modified. So at that point, those guys either buy 13.5s, or run with the mod guys, if there is a class for it assuming.

I am right now looking at picking up two brushless motors, probably a 13.5 and a 6.5 or 7.5 . I may even pick up a 17.5 depending on what way I go with chassis and what the class allows. For the winter at least though, I believe stock is ran for indoors, so the 17.5 could come in handy then.
