XX-CR setup help
a friend of mine (racing on a budget as you'll see) recently got back into the hobby and is using my other friend's old XX-CR. We be racin at Pegasus hobbies in montclair and was wonderin if anyone knows what would be a good spur/pinion gear combo with a co27 motor (and misc. other setuo info). I had my co27 in it and it didnt seem to go very fast...
...but that could be the 3000 stick packs, tamiya plugs, and "plug in" (rtr style) motor plugs on what looks to be 14-16awg wire....
but other than get deans, solder direct, etc, what else can my friend do to get it fast again? (including gearing of course).
I got a good idea for the tires since i race 2wd stock and 4wd mod there already. Any help would be much appreciated!

The first thing to do is go on www.teamlosi.com and get in to their setup sheets. They have a section for discontinuted models and the XX and XXcr are both supported with a few good setups. I ran an XXcr outdoors a couple seasons ago on a rough track and it handled better in the tough than the newer stuff by virtue of longer rear shocks.
If he is running a stock motor against guys with current batteries he will be slow in terms of speed but that is a non issue if he is trying to learn to drive.

It's probably been so long since any of us ran one that we can't remember!
I think that car's gearbox is a little taller than the current stuff (like 2.14/1). Try 24/82 (or whatever the stock spur size is) and pull the car in @ 3 minutes to see if the motor is hot or cool. If hot, drop a tooth, if cool give it a full 5minute run and see what happens. The Losi site might also have the manual available for down load. The manual will have gearing suggestions in the back.

A / B = C (where A = spur gear size, B = pinion gear size, C = External Ratio) Then multiply C (external ratio) by D (internal ratio of the tranmission) = final drive ratio.
So if someone is geared 20/78 with a 2.40:1 transmission and they are using the same motor you are using, you can figure out heir final drive ratio and gear your XXcr the same. 78/20 = 3.9, 3.9*2.4 = 9.36 final drive ratio.

The buggy should have the 2.19 tranny. It should be stamped on the side of the case. Here is the set up I have in my notebook.

cool thanks.
i dont have the buggy with me since its a friends, so it makes it hard to look at the gearbox and stuff etc, lol. But assuming the internal ratio as you said, what would be a good stock motor (p2k2 or co27) spur/pinion combo for a semi-technical track?

Gearing
My notes say I ran a 23 pinion with 84 spur with a Trinity Monster Stock motor. I would start with something in that range with a P2K2 or CO 27.
Run two minutes pull off and check motor temp, if not to hot your are close; if it is already getting hot, gear down two teeth, cool motor, and test again.
If the track is tight and technical you will need to gear lower number of pinion teeth to come out of the corners stronger.

Hydra Drive
I failed to say that if it has the Hydra Drive, you probably want to remove it. They Hydra Drive worked on very rough tracks but a properly set up slipper works just as well and reduces the spool up weight.
