Default B44 gearing issues

I searched and searched, couldn't find my motor in any previous posts.

I just bought the B44, currently building it, while I was at it I bought an LRP TC Spec ESC and a Vector 3.5 brushless. I also bought 16 and 17 tooth pinion gears. Is this going to be a problem. I have read alot of posts regarding the NOvaks, where people have said don't run anything less than 7.5 motors. I hope not, that little engine costs a bunch, don't want to have to buy more stuff for it.

(Even got that new Associated 1015 servo for the steering - I love their stuff.)

Thanks for the help.

Rich

That is going to be way too much motor for off-road. That is a motor designed for on-road. I have seen a lot of people have success with a 6.5 in 4WD including myself. I have seen as low as a 5.5 used in off-road but it was a handful. I personally cannot speak from experience though in terms of the 3.5. I am sure someone here will post and say it is fine, but the general consensus will be that you should trade it for a 6.5 or so.

Rich,

Are you planning on racing, or driving at a track, or just doing 'drag runs'? The 3.5 motors are for Touring car racing, with 5 cells. Running it with 6 cells in offroad isn't ideal. I run a TON of motor, and use the Orion 5.5. Many have suggested I motor down to a 6.5. The 3.5 will work, but is not ideal. As for gearing, the B44 likes a larger pinion than the BJ4 WE, so I think you will be at a 17 or 18.

I would suggest selling the 3.5 motor and get yourself a 5.5-7.5 motor if your going to actually race. The 3.5 is not an appropriate motor for offroad. If your just doing speed runs, then go for it.

Wow guys thanks for all the quick answers... I'm just mad at myself, I go too fast when i'm buying online, should have gone 6.5 or 7.5 even. Ah well live and learn, guess I can always shove the 3.5 into my TC3 or EVO-III limited, guess its off to Tower for a 6.5.

Thanks again.

I agree with foolio, i watched someone try to drive a 3.5 on an off-road track, it was pure insanity. See if you can trade that motor for a 5.5 or even a 6.5, for a little more control.

I'm not to sure with the hearing for the B44 yet, haven't got mine yet.

How are those servos? I have ALWAYS used associated, but haven't tried their servos yet.

You may want to try out the 4.5 Light motor. I ran it with a 19t pinion and it was great.

My ESC blew up after that run randomly, but it ran fine during.. I was surprised how controllable it actually was, because everyone says how horrible it would be. Perhaps the Light edition is a perfect compromise?

Peace

Just my .02

7.5 is great in a 4wd but the 6.5 is faster and depending on your skill level you may perfer the 6.5.

I am running the 6.5 and it is a little hot for me but I geared it down just a little to take away top end and adjusted my radio to take some of the punch out.

If I had to do it all over again i would do the 6.5 light from novak.

depends on what kind of surface you will be running on? If its high bite you can swing the 5.5, but if its like outside and loose dirt, then a 6.5/7.5 combo will be better.

It is ever so slightly lighter in weight, but the real difference is the power delievery. It is just as fast top end but the inital punch when you peg the throttle, is softer.

Basically it gives someone with throttle control issues a handicap, and it allows the use of a lower turn motor to be a little more controlable.

The most generic way I can describe it would be like having a small electronically controled slipper.

Tyler,

On a 100' X 40' indoor med bite track I ran a 23T on my B44. Temp were about 150 to 160 and it had great mix of punch and top end. It is pleanty of motor for small to med size tracks but guys with faster motor are going to be punting you at the end of long straights so watch for it...

Not to worry because you will most likely be passing them in the infield part of the track.

What motor are you gearing at 23 tooth pinion? I am trying to gear a LRP 6.5 brushless in our B44, tried a 19 as suggested in the manual, went to a 20 today, still seems it should have more on the straight.
