Is the new Tamiya DB-01 Durga buggy the next budget racer for the 4wd class? It is based off of the proven design of the 501X drivetrain and suspension, with a strong ABS chassis that can hold stick packs. And if 3Racing and other companies get a look at it and get a hold on one, chances are there will be a racing graphite chassis later on down the road. Alls discusions are welcome here, but only talk if you know what your saying. Don't come just to bash on Tamiya or piss people off.
Looks pretty cool. I am guessing it will accept some of the parts from the 501x.
A guy at my track has the Dark Impact buggy. It has withstood 2 months of LiPo/Novak 4.5 power and hasn't broken anything more than a ball stud. This looks even more capable in terms of chassis layout.

yeah i GPSed my dark impact at 73.2 with a VXL and a 3s in it. ive stripped one gear, but that was before i had the slipper on it. and yes the buggy is supposed to take lots of aftermarket 501x parts. including arms and sway bars and i think possibly towers. acer recing im sure will come out with a nitride bearing kit for it as well. ill post some pics of it in a little bit
To me, the Durga is a little disappointing because there is so much plastic. It'll be sold for about $200, but as Kyosho and MRC have proven, there is a strong market for a competitive 4WD racer in the $250-280 price range. Dump the silver can motor, 1986 plastic CVA shocks and the ABS plastic found on the shock towers Tamiya! At least make them from the same material as the chassis (looks to be a good quality and stiff glass-filled plastic. By the time you're done upgrading this car for a club race, you'll be wondering why you didn't just get a ZX-5. If I wanted a backyard basher, I'd spend the $130 on a Dark Impact. Just a darn shame that Tamiya continues to focus on their already crowded lower end; the gap between the Durga and the 501x should be smaller.
Still, It will need shocks, slipper, cvd's to be track ready.
For what its worth,Being nostalgic I purchased a Dark Impact, Then spent about 2x the purchase price trying to make it hang with the real race cars, Disappointed with the results on the track I went back to my Losi.
I'm sure of nothing. due to it being something i read elsewhere on thr net.
But this is the content of the post at tamiyaclub

I just pre-ordered mine today from RC Champ.
It's going to cost AU$152 and that includes the slipper clutch
I think that probably works out at around US$135-140 - considering that includes the slipper and the actual design of the car is far superior to any previous Tamiya low-spec racer I'd say that's pretty good.
no the dark impact runs for around $130. the DB-01 is supposed to run around $180-200, and comes wit ha slipper already. yes it will need shocks, but thats about it. it doesnt have CVDs, but that isnt a necesity for racing. im sure it wont be a XXX-4 or a SB V2 or ZX-5, but for people who are just getting into the hobby or cant afford the real deal buggies, i have a feeling this will be competitive. and when your done with everything, it wont be as high a price, even if you get the nicer slipper system and the racing shocks. it still wont be running at $450+... here are some pictures. hopefully tamiya will put a few more out soon.
yes the buggy does have a lot of plastic. but doesnt the ZX-5 too? the shock towers need to be stiffer. they look a lot like the DF-03 ones and they are a little too flexible. can withstand any hit, but stiffening them would be good. but if you take an old tie rod or something and screw it onto each end of the tower, it stiffens it up great and helps handling. and i garuntee the price will drop a lot. hence it is supposed to be a "budget" racer. meanign itll drop and wont be nice, but still competitive in the stock class probably. i know my dark impact is.

Like I have already said RC-Champ are taking orders at $135 USD

There is no slipper installed on the pics that I have seen, Nor is it listed in the specs. Of course It may come as standard, Though I haven't personally seen anything to say so.

CVD's are a must for racing, Dog bones chew/wear out under strain far to quickly, and drop out far too often. Half the battle of a race is making it to the finish. They should be fitted as standard.

I'm sure it will be a good buggy in its price bracket, Though if we see it hanging with the fast cars on the track then I will eat my hat. Budget means sacrifice.
I agree that the ZX-5 has quite a bit of plastic, but it's of good quality and it's stiff. The Durga has the soft ABS that we've seen since the Vanquish. It's also based off the flagship 501x, which is a $450+ CF and aluminum beauty. I just wish they didn't cheapen it so much <shrug>. This doesn't mean I won't get one. I'm a big Tamiya fan, but this won't be an automatic purchase for me.
FYI, the $180-200 quote is for US spec kit. You can pre-order the most basic version of the Durga at RC-Champs (Japan) for ~$124 (13700 yen). Shipping to the East Coast is about $50. http://sv09.wadax.ne.jp/~rc-champ-jp...e2bf726897046a
