Hi guys, i am looking at getting my son into RC racing (i run 1/8th buggy) and am keen on the ZX5. Have looked at prices and want to know if the RTR is a worthy car or should i go the kit option. Are they a good car, i am hoping a
4wd car with a 540 silver can motor would be the easiest combination to learn on. Are tyres and rims interchangable with other makes. Any help would be appreciated.

You should take a look at one of these !!
They are pretty easy to find parts for and hella fast !!
Can still get parts through www.racing-cars.com believe it or not.
A bit dated but you can get one on ebay for almost nothing.

with regards to choosing a 4wd:
If you want a straight battery config:
You cant go past the Kyosho ZX-5. Its relatively cheap and highly competitive behind the right set of controlling hands. Parts support is cheap and you can buy directf rom Kyosho America and top shelf online shops like A-Main.
Second Choice would be an original Jconcepts BJ4 (you can always upgrade to the World Spec if you want to go saddle later)
If you want a saddle pack config, then theres a few more choice to be made, as Saddle config seem to be the accepted flavour these days..
So. my pick would be:
1. Yokomo MR-4BX (any version). Belt drive for smooth power delivery, adjustable centre one way and very very Strong car. Only weakness is the exposed diffs... But all you need are some Shadow Antichoke™ covers (available at www.teamadrenaline.net) and it will delay the next rebuild a lot longer than running it uncovered.
2. Jconcepts BJ4. We all know bout this car, so not gonna dance the Victory laps here. and the guys over at JConcepts ROCKS.
3. Associated B44. Yet to be available, its the production model of the BJ4. Current Worlds winning platform. Nuff said.
4. Hotbodies D4. Proving to have a lot of potential, some say a BJ clone... but its cheap, drives and behaves similar to a BJ and good parts support. Problem: weak diffs.

I thought they have a diff upgrade for the D4 that should have fixed the original problem they were having?
#42
they have, and over here at our local races, people are still blowing diffs running brushless with the new part.
Also, another fix is to use the yokomo BX diff nut, screw and thrust balls / washers.. even then its still blowing up.

What exactly do you think the problem is? The diff is a basic design, and is most like the others out there. I wonder why it won't hold up. I was thinking of getting a D4, but I had thought the problem was fixed! Darn.

Most of the time, its ppl not shimming the bevel gears correctly, and its stripping / catching and exploding diffs. Once this is done they are generally better.
What it is? I cant really say...as I dont own a bevel geard 4wd.
But then again, some have had good luck with their D4's
