What is the condidtion of your dirt right now? If it's dark brown like most peoples property here in the midwest, then keeping it hard packed and building up a groove is almost impossible. But if you dig deep enough you can find the good stuff, I'm talking about clay. It's everywhere, you just have to dig deep enough.
The dark brown stuff is great for growing, but crumbles too easily, but if you dig up the clay, it's horrible for growing, but hold together better than anything.
I found this out when I was little. I dug a 5 foot deep hole in my mothers garden. I threw the dark soil off to the side and layered all the clay on top of that, My mother still can't grow much back their because of me!

Just soak your tires in diesel!

i would prefer something other than sand to add in. some form of dirt or soil would be better. when sand is packed, the quartz and silica rip apart your tires.. unless you run a lot of cars and often (or indoors), the blue groove is not worth the tire cost. Here in florida where it rains often I've had little to no problems turning a track around from a total monsoon to racing in an hour with a 80-85% clay/15% other aggregate. The big thing is whats underneath the whole area. if that doesn't drain well then your track material can become a bigger issue. it all starts from the ground up.

Here is my recently made track on plain Illinois farm dirt. Packs hard, lifts up a little fluff/dust, doesn't crack to much.
