Buggy = 8ight, Xray EC, Kyosho or Mugen. Honestly if I were you it would be Mugen because that is where you came from. You will love the new car.
Get light screws and run Lipo in it to reduce the weight! You will need a regulator.

Motor = Novarossi, RB. Just depends on the size of the track.

Pipe = .053, .086 or JP-3 based on the track

Servos = Futaba or Ace. Get coreless motors. Futaba has brushless servos coming out that will be the end all for servos.

Radio = Futaba, KO or M-11. I love my M-11 and again it will be something you are more familiar with. Spectrum has a cool radio right around the corner.
I love the 2.4ghz stuff.

Money is no object??? Buy the matching truggy! It will give you something else to do. Buy a big motor and laugh your a$$ off. You paid for it!

Then I would just go to the local track and buy the tires that the local fast guys are running and buy the fuel that the local hobby stores carry (I prefer byrons or Odonell 30% race fuel.) Make sure you have extra suspensions arms, clutch bell bearings, and things like that.
that´s my opinion to !

Awsome
Thanks for the replys, I went and bought a few RC Mags to start checking out the gear. It looks like at one of the big races the Losi 8 was kicking butt.
I have a MBX5R on special order from Ultimate hobbies in orange , but after reading all that i am considering the 8. As for motor I will take your advise and get the ws7III or the rossi 7 port. Seems the RB would be eisier to mannage the power. Radio I am leaning towards the M11 due to familiarity. I am having a hard time with the servo choice now

What speed and tork should i be looking for in a set of servos?

Thanks, Patrick

depends on what you want really. i run speed servos only i like fast response so i run JR9000S's in both. alot of guys like fast steering and slower throttle to smooth out the power a bit. i like it to rip wide open.

i would look at something around 110-150oz torque for steering and the same for throttle. the 9000s's are 128oz torque with .06 transit super fast and plenty of power for buggy. plus all the JR's have a 3 year warranty. they will send you a new servo no questions asked if you have problems and turnaround on them is usually 1 week.

get the hitech 5955 for steering and the 5966 for throttle. In my opinoin I would narrow it down to 3 buggies. The mugen mbx5r, losi 8ight, or the xray xb8ec. As far as engine go with a os vspec, very easy to tune never blows plugs, and I have never had any pass me on the straight with my vspec. Me personally I would stay away from jammin not that its not a good buggy but Im sure it will be getting updated before any of the buggies I listed above

All of the buggies listed are on an equal playing field. The mbx-5r and the eight have a differant feal to them. Perhaps you should go to your local track and ask people if you can take theirs for a few laps.
