Where's the esc in this picture? That is a spy shot.

I know the guys at Losi that are doing that testing. Like about every manufacturer at this point, Losi does have a couple brushless converted setups that they are using to do motor, battery, and ESC testing on. I suspect the spy pics are just one of those rigs. From what I understand they are all using a RC-Monster.com plate and testing the Xcelorin ESC to see how it handles various motors and KVs

There's a shim you have to put in between the motor and motor mount *specifically* to prevent little rocks from getting inside, and it does its job well from what I've seen when I disassembled it. It's kinda mind-boggling for me to see these off-road cars completely ignoring any kind of gear enclosure...

I see this as a big problem only because my RC18B gets small rocks in between the pinion and spur gears *all the time*, and most of the time they even stick to the spur (making a loud periodic grinding noise), forcing me to manually get rid of the small piece of rock... :/
I think part of the reason we can get away with open drivetrains on the 1/8th buggies is the size if the gears vs the size of the rocks and dirt. The pieces of dirt that get kicked up from most tracks are too small to stick in the gears of the 1/8th cars. There's no space small enough for them to wedge in. I've got one of those Kyosho plastic gears on a car that has about 3 hours of runtime on it and it has no rock or debris damage.

On the other hand, the gear on the RC18T/B series is the perfect size to trap the dirt and sand. One lap on our dirt oval or off-raod track and it is full of grit. Even with the DP gear cover, I have to clean out the gear after each heat. Then there are guys running [1/10th] Sprint cars with exposed 64 pitch gears on a dirt oval and not having problems. The only thing I can figure there is that the teeth are too small to get any dirt get wedged in.

Are you sure that it's a Losi Spy shot car? It looks like it says "Stampede Project" on the receiver box cover, i.e. the poster's own Losi 8ight conversion project maybe, but I could be wrong. Wrong pic perhaps?

Hmm, interesting info, thanks.

Are you saying the DP gear cover for RC18B still does not make its gear assembly 100% dirt-proof?

It is absolutely a Losi
Looks just like mine.

It's an 8b by the looks of the mud guards. The 8T has more rubberized mud guards that have a flat finish. That was one of the first things I noticed about the 8b. It's mud guards are a harder (more brittle) plastic. The 8T's are pretty much indestructible.

Between the Buggy and Truggy, even though this is what I didn't want to do to this MMM

I've changed on MMM, just to keep it running:

1-Casing spacer for fan
2-fan
3-wiring for fan to batt instead of bec
4-No switch
5-removed top shroud on Truggy MMM -No Fan(we'll see)
6-extra heatshrink at the bottom of the board
wires to keep covered to prevent exposed wires
7-bored holes around MMM casing, so rx/switch wires to not wear
8-Stack of double sided tape on the bottom of the board to the bottom casing to prevent fan connector (broke) or other electronic components from rubbing
9- list is growing.....
could you post pictures of points 6 and 7?
thanks

Very controlable and can be geared up to get the speed if you desire. I was running 14/48 and It seemed pretty fast to me. I am now running 12/48. The temps with the 14/48 were great. Motor 140's, Battery High 90's, ESC high 90's. This was not on the track however. They may be a bit higher on the track but I dont think too much. Hope this helps.

I just sold my Grandmothers old Oldsmobile for $1200.00. I actually hated to see it go but I didn't need to keep it.

Now I need to find a used MBX-5T for sale that I can buy for my next project.
