what about a strip of wood with holes drilled in it with a carpenter's bit? maybe bevelled too to stop them falling out...

Motor tubes or motor cases! Ea motorsports carries the seperate tubes. Fishing tackle/lure boxes work also. Corally makes a sweet motor box as does trinity.
