well i use a hakko936, alot of guys use this iron. it comes with everything you'll need to get started. i do recommend right off you buy the broad tip for it if you plan on doing your own batteries. also if you have fry's electronics where you live buy it there, it will be around 15 to 25 dollars cheaper than your track shop or a national hobby chain store.

I use a 40W Weller. Just get the holder at RadioShack for $10. I use it for everything, including assembling batteries.

im in england, just did a quick google search for Hakko in the uk and they are priced at almost £100, good going typical rip off britain! i do not think i will be using a iron enough to justify spending that, not after all the cash i have already spent on car parts

i did however come across a Aoyue 936 solder station, looks like a Hakko clone? and theres on ebay for £29.95 + p&p know anything about these ones?

You can probably find a shop in the US willing to ship it out to ya. They are 60 or 70 USD.

the only problem with that is the customs charges i will get, iv had to pay about £50 in the last week alone to customs and so called clearing fee's to parcelforce in the last week, so id like to try and get something from within the uk if pos. i may change my mind though $60-70 will still be cheaper even with extra costs...i will see, if i decide on a Hakko anyway

I think you may be able to find a shop who would help you out with customs...

As far as the car battery thing you might have to find an inverter as they come with 110 US plugs on them.

I second that. This is an 80W iron with a large tip. Fabulous for batteries. You can install a smaller tip for finer work, but I don't bother. Talk about fast, it will solder a battery in about 1 second. Also they have an adjustable temperature control which is nice. They are marketed as stained glass soldering irons so they are heavy duty. Only complaint I have heard is they don't last forever... keeping them running all day all the time, they sometimes eventually die, imagine that. About $80US in my LHS. Worth the investment.

Hakko. Unless you can find an Ungar. These two are in a class of their own when it comes to irons.
