Does a Lipo have the same punch as a 4200 NiMH?

What size Lipo?

I'm racing a 11x2 motor in a T4, local track with NO Roar anti-Lipo rules (yet).

We run three five minute qual's and a five minute main.

Looking at one Lipo battery instead of the six 4200 (four for races and two as backup).

I would get a maxamps 6000mah lipo.It fits in the T4 with the factory battery strap and with 1 of these you can run then repeak and only have around $75 in your race and practice.The only catch is you have to have a lipo compatiable charger.I use the Duratrax Ice.I ran a 20 min main with a 19 turn motor and a 8000 mah Lipo pack yesterday.

I'd just get a couple of the 3200 LiPos. Two of those packs would get you through a whole night, even if there aren't many heats and you get in a rush.

I have 3 Peak 4800 packs and I love them. FWIW -- my 4800 packs have more runtime than those off-brand 6000 packs.

Get a lipo and don't look back. Either the orion or the maxamps are great packs. I have the maxamps 6000 mah pack. I run my heat, pull it off and plug it in to the charger to keep it topped off, then it is ready to go. I don't even have to take the battery out to charge it, as it doesn't get hot. The down side of having to have a good lipo charger is easily made up by not having to have dischargers, equalizers, carrying around all that and the batteries, and the hassel of battery maintenance.

At our indoor track Orion 4800's don't even come close to the run time of my MaxAmps 6000. 33 minutes with 4300 foam TC... Orions are getting a little over 20 mins. I'm not knocking the 4800's but what you stated is just not what I have seen. As far as punch I think a good set of 4200's may have a little more at first, but it is hardly noticeable. I've had my lipo for about 6 months and it feels as good now as it did when I got it. Could anyone say that about a set of 4200's?

In your case I'd just be carefull of amp draw running a mod motor. The larger the lipo generally means it will handle more amp draw. A 20C MaxAmps 6000 will handle 120 amps constant (calculated off the capacity). You don't want to stress out a lipo and overheat it. If you charge correctly and don't stress out the cell I think you'd love a lipo. And you certainly won't need 6 packs!

I run a 4800 team orion lipo in my t4. At the begining of the race my 3800's have more punch but after about 3 minutes in the punch drops off on the 6cell pack. The lipo stays consistant for the entire 5 min. The big disadvantage is the weight of the lipo is less so the car does not handle the same as a 6 cell pack. I have the weight figured out on the truck but still working on the B4. The convinence of the lipo far outweighs the drawbacks for me. Run the same pack all day,no discharging,waiting 3hrs between charges.

6000 Maxamps batt. Weight is very close to a nimh pack. The 6000 is just a little bit lighter.

what about the maxamps 8000.....is it heavier, the same, or what..........and will the 8000 fit in standard losi and ae battery trays?

The 8000 pack is thicker than a 6 cell so you would have to fasion some way to hold down the pack other than the stock strap.

Another thing to consider about the punch questions is that regardless of voltage figures a Lipo user has 4-6 fewer ounces to get moving. After you run them for a little while you will see that Lipo has a voltage curve just like Nimh, it's just longer and flatter. I have really enjoyed it in mod stadium truck and will be switching to it shortly in 2wd buggy. I will need to motor down though. A GTB 6.5 is borderline too much with normal batteries. It will be difficult with Lipo.

hate to ask a stupid question, but.....i don't have to change speed controls to use li-po do i? is there anything else i'll need besides a li-po pack and a li-po charger to run li-po in 1/10th scale off-road? and btw.....is li-po legal in the stock classes as well as the mod classes?

Technically, lipo is not legal. I have never heard of a track that allows them in stock as it would be a *huge* advantage given the extra voltage and the large weight advantage. Most tracks allow them for mod if you are talking about off road. It's easy to have too much power in offroad and most guys over motor anyway.

Any speed control will work but most lipo makers encourage the use of low voltage cutoffs. The minimum voltage of a lipo 7.4v pack is 6.0v and they are putting out like 8.4v when the charge is fresh. If the car is going noticable slower then it's time to pull it off. If you run it until it stops, you're asking for a ruined battery but it's pretty easy to stay above the specified minimum. I ran my GTB 6.5 for 20+ minutes and put the battery back on the charger and it was still above 7v.

Yep...LOL...you don't have to wonder if the pack is low.

They go great right up until they dump...and that's still not below 6v. Just don't keep going after it dumps and you'll be fine. In that way, it's not too different from NiMh...you don't want to keep going on a dumped pack or you'll hurt it. The difference is that with LiPo, the damage is more likely permanent.

I've got a max-amps 9000 that I'm running in my b-4.Weight is very close to 6 cell nimh.Just had to take out the thumb screws and install long screws as the 9000 is alot thicker than 6 cell.The power is awesome and if I don't run too many practice laps it will last me through 3 qualifiers and a 7 min. main with out charging all day.Lipo is the only way to go if your track allows it.

I would like to see some pics of the lipo setups you guys have in your vehicles, especially how you have them installed in your various vehicles for the much higher mah rating packs.

If you have it installed in a 4wd buggy that uses a stickpack setup, let me see it too if you can.

I am pretty much out of electric other than a few parts here and there specific to it, but, it would be interesting to try it again with brushless and lipo setup.
