How to unglue..........glue?
 

Apparently my top wasnt tight enough and it got on my Shock matcher (at the bottom of it no less.) How can I take this off?

i'm not totally sure what a shock matcher is, but if it won't be hurt, soak it in some acetone. as an example, it's what alot of people use to soften up the glue on tires/rims so that the tires and/or rims can be removed and reused. :nod:

you can also boil you tire rim to unglue.

What is the Shock matcher. Yes just put the tires in acetone overnight and then you can cut the tires off the rim in the morning.

uh....he's not ungluing tires. :lol:



he said he had a shock matcher (whatever that is) and he wants to get the glue off of it....not tires/rims. :nod:

There's a pic of it, the little needle at the bottom is what got glued.

You could spray acetone on the needle.

as I'm back into off-road after a long break and was going to ask a similar question.

So let me get this right, once the tread pattern has gone from the tire the rim can be reused if I remove as much of the tire as I can and then soak the rim in acetone?

Does this result in the rubber just being easy to get off or does it actually disolve the rubber?

Also is any other clean up required before putting new rubber on?

no, you just chuck the whole wheel in the acetone and then pull off the tire

bake in oven 325 for 15 minutes. pop rim out of tire. simple clean quick and easy.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TAKE GLUED TIRES OFF THE RIM? Will this process damage the tires and foam?

Soaking in acetone disolves the CA glue. The rubber does not dissolve. Clean up would consist of removing all of the old tire and glue remnants and ensuring the rim isn't bent before you put new tires on.

Just be aware that doing this will create a burning rubber smell that can linger quite a while. My buddy put his in a toaster oven, but took it outside first.

When you take the tires off the rim it's because you want to reuse the rim. The goal is to save the rim because the tire is used up. Then you save the $20 for new rims.

Yes the foam inserts will be destroyed. Soaking off new tires or baking them also would likely mess up the tire.

I prefer the heat method because it doesn't force me to have a can of acetone sitting around the garage. It's also faster.

I want to remove the tire from the rim because a "bro" at the LHS told me they were good rims. The broke like glass. So now I have a brand new set of molded foams and tires that I need to get off of broken rims.

I heard about the baking for 325/350 for 15mins. That sounds like the way to go.

i am telling you.

put them in the oven @ 325 for 15-20 minutes. they will be completely unglued just pop the rim out.

the rubber does smell for a little bit but nothing that bad. bout like burning chicken on the stove.

Take a coffee can that the tires will fit into and put a pair iin at a time and fill up with Acetone to just cover the tires ,wieght down if nesessary and cover and let set for a few hours . This WILL NOT RUIN the tires or Proline ,Trinity and Panther foams . Just wring out the fluid back into the can to be used for the second pair and let them dry out , they will come right back when dry ,and the tires will be nice and clean and ready to be installed.
I bet those "glass "rims were GS silicone units , I had 2 sets and both of them smashed up like glass ! With only 1 run on the tires ! I was not happy !
