5.5 or 6.5?

5.5 or 6.5?
i want to put a brushless system in my race truck. im looking into an lrp sphere with either a novak 5.5 or 6.5. im not sure whic hto get though. its an all around track. and i bash alot too. the track has real long straights with big jumps that take alot of power, but also has a few tight technical sections. which motor would be good on this track?

yeah i talked to some guys at my track, and one guy let me drive his losi with a gtb/ 5.5 combo. it was really fast. i liked the way it drove, but it took some getting used too. he was one of the only people to clear the huge triple down the back straight at my track. only him, 1 other race truck guy, one or two revos, me, and alot of the 118th buggies could clear it. of course i cleared it with my revo, i didnt try it with his truck. the truck would wheelie on demand and outrun almost al lthe other race trucks. the only few that could keep up were running mamba systems, which i dont really want to get.

computer radio?
if you have a computer radio with End Point Adjustment (EPA's), you can always reduce the top end if the 5.5 is too much. Will it be exactly like a 6.5, no...but it's a pretty easy way to de-tune your ride for the conditions.
I use this method to let first timers (or my daughter) drive my cars.
I have a 5.5 in a XXX4 and it feels lightening quick.

yeah i have an MX3-S synthesized. it can adjust EPA. the XXX4 is a buggy. im going to be running a 2wd race truck, so that will be a little different. but i think im going to go with the 5.5. its the same price and like you said i will be able to tone it down a little if i need to so i think that will be good. thanks for the advice.

i run 6.5 on 4wd and its a real handfull.
i detune it by running some old less powerfull packs. turning down the epa doesnt feel the same

I say go with the 6.5. You will have a hard time trying to control an 5.5 powered 2wd truck especially in competition when having to focus on driving against other drivers. The 6.5 is in no way slow being close to a 9 turn brushed in power and you might want to even consider the 7.5 too. Controllability is everything in racing. I beat people all the time that have there cars overpowered to the point of not being able to control it well.

Personally I didn't like the feel of the 5.5 with EPA turned down. Much happier with the 6.5. One other thing regardless of which you choose - I'm pretty sure the Sphere does not monitor motor temp like the GTB does. You may want to consider the sintered rotor. After I put it in, motor temp dropped a decent amount. I can run 15 minutes with a 4800 lipo in grass and my motor stays cooler than ever. Just a thought.

yeah i understand that. ive done it too. but driver has alot to do with it. i could control the guy's losi with the 5.5. Im real good on throttle control off road and know how to take stuff pretty good. i race dirtbikes too and that helps me understand power on the track better. so im pretty sure i can handle the power, it just might take some getting used too.
and i was going to get a sintered motor. ive heard that running the velocity motors with the sphere was an awsome combo. the sphere does have a thermal control on it. it will shut off if the motor or it starts to over heat. plus i trust lrp speedos more then novaks. ive had some problem with novak ESCs in the past, and dont really want to pay that much to have it break. ive had great reliability with my sphere.

There are not usually heating issues for BL motors. They do not heat at nearly the rate of brushed motors. The only component that really needs protection is the speed control.

do you think i should run the 5.5 and gear it higher or run the 6.5?

I would advise to use the 6.5. The 5.5 is really too much unless you are running 4wd. The 6.5 when geared properly will be very fast like stated in one of the above posts but be more controllable. It will give you longer runtimes also.

but then u dont command respeckt and everyone coming up to you and asking what motor you got
seriosly get a 7.5, you will enjoy it much more, with less wheel spin, less tire wear, able to full throttle down the straight and be more consistant.
