4wd off-road motor choice
First, just a thanks to all those on hear with the plethora of info.
Now, im in th emarket for a new motor for my xxx-4. I was running an Orion rev. 11x1 but i this it has blown a wind or something. The solder holding the wire to the arm has gotten hot and flung out of the "holders". I tryed resoldering it and running the motor @ 3v for around 45seconds with no load. It seemed ok. A guy at practice last night cut the com and i put in new brushes, broke it in properly. After about 3 good pulls down the back straight it came apart....
So if there is nothing to do with this arm, i just wanted a few experienced opinions on a good motor choice. Im on a budget and getting back into the sport after a 10yr break, so i want to get a good motor thats gonna last the season with proper care, but that come the end of the indoor season im not out driving the motor.
The 11 is a little much for my ability right now, but i can deffintly say it would be a good motor for me in a few weeks after re-honing the skills.

I run at crcrc in columbus wich is a nice hard pack clay blue groove track

I always liked 10-12 for the xxx4, the xx4 9-11. depending on how fast and how techical the infield a good 19 turn may be a good choice. you may give up a little on the straight but your transition in the corners of 9-12 may not be smooth enough where the 19 is smoother and 19 has a ton of torque. 19 will work best on tight technical tracks where you never get to pull the throttle for 9-12.

Fowler-The benefit to the V2 series of motor's is they last a LONG time between cuts and the brushes are cheap compared to Trinity XXX and checkpoints.
I would simply contact someone for a new armature.Maybe a 12x2-15x2..

When practicing I would check the temp of the motor after 6-7 minutes.
4wd is kinda hard on motor's and if ran for 10 or more minutes you might be melting alot of arms.

Also, that gearing was kind of high for a 11 T V2. When I ran this motor in a XXX-4 I geared it at 19/92 and the motor ran around 180 degrees without problems. Make sure you are running the aurora body and open up the cooling hole for the motor. If you want to buy another motor the 11T checkpoint is a great motor and runs cooler than the Orion V2.

I went threw all my old parts and found a few arms, i have a nice Peak 12x2 arm here, just need a fresh cut on the comm and i think im going to run this this weekend, but i have been checking out the Checkpoint line of motors. They seem to be awesome units as well. Aguy at the track is running a 9x1 checkpoint in his ZX5...DAMN!! Tooooo fast for my ability by far.

Its best to gear the V2 Revolution Motors at 6/7 over the wind in 4wd. Ryan Cavalieri runs a 9x1 motor in his BJ4 geared at a 16/81.

A 11T motor is a good motor to start with on a 4wd. It is not insanely fast but not overly slow either. The checkpoint motors you were checking out are just plain awesome. They are real screamers. Also, make sure that you do not run your belt too tight on your XXX-4. This will bind up the bearings and create more drag which can make the motor run hotter. The belt should skip a tooth or two on hard acceleration. One good thing about running a fast motor when you are learning is you learn throttle control!

thanks for all the help, alot has changed since the last time i was in RC. A T2 was my race truck and the first cyclone speedo had just been released....

Glad to hear that. I really like my Orion Revolution motor (11x2) I have in my X-5. It gives me excellent performance and long life too. Thinking about trying a 9x2.

i picked up a checkpoint 11x2 for my 4whl. more than enough power for our track, actually a bit too much. it's got a ton of snap and with the infinity brushes needs very little maintenance.

it really matters on the size of the track...open track i usally run a 10x1 orion rc edition...on tighter tracks like socal usally like a 11x1 or a 12x1 orion ryan cavalari edition..its a real good motor!

Ive been fiddling with building and tuning stock motors for my buddy who runs a BK2.It seems to be going well as i got him his first win Sun. as well,so I think im going to invest in a few good arms, like a 11x2 and 10x1. Ill do some reaserching and start doing my mods to..
