i doubt they will ban R/C engines. but if they do im moving to england

That's for gasoline engines ,not methanol burning "toy engines"

besides even with the castor oil mix in our engines they still burn cleaner than gasoline burning ones....... however watchout 1/5th scales!!!!!!

But by the time the law takes effect, it will take 10-15 years to for all of the old engines to finally die off...... a decently taken care of briggs 5 horse can last for upwards of 20 years!! and my dad has a mcculoch wire trimmer that has been running for 15 or so!!!!

I'm sure engines manufactured past a certain date will be exempt, so all the currrent 1/5th scale engines will be grandfathered in. They can't tell people who have 10X $200 weedwackers and huge landscaping companies that their engines are *poof* illegal. They would probably just say, all new engined manufactured in, or imported to, the United States need to abide by the following smog emmisions requirements. They can't change the millions of current small engines out there, and they can't force every household in America to buy new lawnmowers right on the spot. It's like with cars, you can still get an old lead sucking Ford flathead, but they just can't make them anymore (At least not for mass production).

If something like that does weed it's way down into R/C, it will probably mean a bad time initially for engine manufacturers, then a time of intense progress and fierce competition. Look at the 80's, when car companies made some of the worst cars on the planet. After they got used to the concept of small displacement engines, they began making them more efficient, and more powerful than ever. Now a nice 396 BB V8 will still eat one in the 1/4 mile, but these are more street friendly. Hell, it might mean that O.S., Rossi, Orion, and OFNA just might have to start making more affordable 4 strokes, with better ignition systems. All this is assuming that any of this even applys to .10-5.0 cubic inch engines anyway.

The technical advancements that could take place after an initial re-orientation period may be drastic, but in the long run they will probably lead to better performing, more efficient engines. Look at the CRF from Orion, if they can make that type of engine, why can't they make that type of engine that anyone can buy? Something like this would force companies to look into ways to make more efficient engines at more reasonable prices.

Again, this probably won't affect our range of the engine spectrum, but if it does it will probably force some people out of the hobby initially, then more people than ever will start to take it up once the engines are more reliable, they run on cheaper gas, they last longer before rebuilds (Because of the cleaner fuels) and they are easier to tune (Because I'm sure some will be 4 strokes).

Plus, many lawn mower engines available now are already OHV, and some are even OHC (Like some Subaru generators, and HONDA lawn mowers). They even have small engines like those found on tillers that are OHV, not that I really like Honda's, but still... the advancements are quite impressive.

Exactly...it's the hydrocarbon emissions that are a concern. Methanol and nitromethane aren't hydrocarbon fuels. They make all sorts of other emissions, but not the stuff that causes smog.

nitro will never die but 1/5 scale maybe will unless the make a 23cc engine running on glow fuel...thatll be INSANE

23cc's running on nitro....nope.... but I don't see why they wouldn't just convert them to alchohol or a gasahol mix......
