Have you looked into MST?
They make a true 1/10 scale crawler. The CMX or the CFX. The value and quality is very good. They can run all the Tamiya bodies.

The one thing about cheaper rigs is lesser quality and depending on what u r trying to crawl there can be a lot of torque on parts that might cause breaks often. Definitely checkout stuff on YouTube vids to see others put the rig thru its paces

That might be my next project. I am going to skip the Traxxas. I like building stuff.

Also, I like kits because if I am rebuilding it or replacing a part that's hard to get to, it's nice to be able to fall back on the manual with rebuilding the car if you aren't sure which screws go where.

Hey, thanks for taking a look. I have a question to ask.
I'm a racer guy at heart. I race touring cars and short course trucks (5 in total), and I've never tried true slow scale crawling. I would kind of like to. I've always liked realistic looking cars, that's why I don't race buggies or like pan cars or anything not super scale-looking.
I want to get into scaling, but I would like to not spend more money than I have to. I will never buy anything I can't get on Towerhobbies, Horizon Hobby, or Amain.com. If Associated made a crawler, I would immediately buy that (I'm an AE fanboy, LOL!) but since they don't I have a lot more options that are really confusing.
The best options so far look like the Axial SCX10 DeadBolt ($300) and the ECX Barrage ($180). If I could find an unbuilt Axial SCX10 Dingo kit, I would be more happy. I am much more comfortable with a car if I had built it myself.
I know the SCX10 has infinite aftermarket support and is an incredibly dependable platform, but it's $300. Ouch. And I don't even know if I like scaling yet. That's a big jump.
That's why I'm considering the $120 cheaper Barrage.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!
Somebody please shed some light on this subject.

Just swap to use your 2S lipo.
Also, I too hope AE comes with a crawler someday.

They are all different. Personally I like the D90 the best. I have been running it stock and don't think any mod is needed. Plus everything is metal However, the Ascender does out perform the D90. I did get the Ascender with mods already. I believe OSRC shortened the axles. The Sawback comes with leaf springs and internal spring shocks. It drives different than the other two. My son likes the Sawback more than the other two. My 6-year old daughter drives the Ascender and able to keep up with her brother with the Sawback.

Hey 4roller,
you said MSTs can run Tamiya CC-01 bodies?
I'm pretty sure that the MST and the ECX Barrage are the same car with different bodies and tires.
So that means I can run a Barrage with a CC-01 body?
AWESOME!
I don't particularly like the look of the beige body that's on there, but it's only $180, so I can't complain much.
So then my decision is Barrage.
I should be buying it in about a month.
thanks for that little tidbit of info

They're an OK truck for the money, but only take a little 380 sized motor. The mst cmx/cfx is hands down a superior vehicle in every way.

The mst cmx and ECX barrage are absolutely not the same. I believe this is the oem for the barrage
RGT Hobby - ROCK CRUISER

My only concern about the MST is parts support.
Barrage has parts easily accessible on Horizon, and it's like $90 cheaper. With a standard size servo, I bet the ECX crawls just fine.
EDIT: They're also available in hobbyshops.
What I would also do to the ECX is get some white RC4WD 1.55" steelies, zip them on, lower the ride height, and take out the travel limiters. That would look 1000 times better than the original IMO.

If it were me, the decision would be simple: mst hands down. Its a quality vehicle made by a reputable manufacturer. The ecx is just a no name rebrand.
