Default OS's Big Ol' Raptor

Those big 1/7 or so Radio Shack Raptor bodies were calling out to me for a build... While the rest of the truck is junk, the body is excellent. Solid, lots of detail, and plenty big for some mods.

Started a long term project a while ago and am about 1/2 there. I'll post up the past pics and keep it updated going forward.

Started designing a trail chassis for the underneath. Will be three speed, so has a low gear for any rocks I come across, as well as some faster speeds worthy of the Raptor name. Goal is to keep the truck looking scale with the stance and performance. Follow along as the chassis comes to life:

First, you need a plan..lay out the components and figure out what is going to go where.

Design the chassis and start cutting

Since this is an IFS rig, needs a front skid set-up...

Redo the front suspension for proper width and travel. Stock on the left, and modded on the right

Start mocking up the chassis

Once everything is cut, drilled, straight and ready, do some final trimming and painting.

Reassembly:

and a mock up with the body...

And that's where it stands as of today. Got quite a bit to do, but it's coming along.

Spec list so far:
  • HPI WK rear axle w/Axial HD gears, and wraith swaybar
  • Redcat front gearbox assembly w/matching Axial HD gearset, Wild Dagger front arms, and Duratrax C's and knuckles
  • Unknown rear shocks (but very smooth!)
  • Proline front shocks (maybe...subject to change)
  • Wraith driveshafts, heavily modded with epoxy and internal bracing. Maxx shafts on standby.
  • Tamiya semi 3 speed, stock with bearings
  • Axial wraith tranny with modified dig. Flipped for RWD/4WD option, lockout removed
  • Unlocked diffs for now.
  • KD 650 motor on 3S, EVX2 ESC
  • Modified TQ 4ch radio to control it all

Just picked up a bunch of linkages, and mounting the shift servos and radio/batt tray shortly. May even get a test drive soon. Stay tuned for future updates!

So far, yes. Think they match the overall stance pretty good. Do have plenty of 2.2's to try. I've seen some builds with 1.9's, and while they look pretty scale, was going for a more agressive look.

3 speed shifter linkage and servo installed last night, used a linear server and it works like a champ. The dig shift is giving me fits. It has such a short throw and the modded TQ radio is only point to point, so I get full throw in both directions. Either going to wire in some pots on the servo channel to adjust the EPA manually or figure out something mechanical.

Maybe use a linkage with springs for your dig if you have room for it. Like the forward to reverse setups that the t maxx uses if you are going to stick with the tq transmitter that is.

Very cool build by the way will be watching for updates.

Yes, both those and TSL's...anything larger than 4.5" and i'd have to cut the wheelwells. Not ready to do that yet.

Yeah the flatirons look great. RC4wd has some tires that look like BFG's. Not sure on the size though.

These look like bfg a/t's but might be a little small.

MTZ's are another tire some 1:1 guys are using.

Well, I drove it...sorta. Modded the TQ radio and flipped the channels so it has a true 3 pos switch for the tranny, and the rocker controls the dig. Finished up the radio tray, linkages, etc and took it for a gentle test spin. 3 speed works sorta, doesn't like going into the lowest gear. And by user error, I snapped off the lug for my dig servo, so it was only 2wd. But, it moved under it's own power! Always a good moment.

Defintely need to rethink the linkages (and get another servo for the dig) and do some sorting out on the steering.

The test run..number 1. Note the lack of a servo for the dig, sorta popped itself off. Exactly why you test run.

Tweak time. "Dig" servo...fabbed a new bracket to hang off the radio tray, the one mounted to the chassis didn't work out.

3 speed shift servo...tried a linear servo here, but didn't have the torque to ram it into low gear.

Body mounted...standard clips in back, and velcro in front. Experimenting with wheels and tires here. Think a more rounded profile looks better than the square Flat Irons. Not sure yet...been trying out a few options. Started pulling parts off for bodywork too.

Sitting a little lower than I thought, WB needs a tuck in the back

wow...long time no update!

Finally got around to stripping the body and getting some color on it. Quick poser shot after the paint dried. Also got the wheels done - highly modded Revolvers. Rear lip removed on the front and both removed out the rear to get them to the same track width.
