Default Cloud Computing vs. Safety & Privacy

Microsoft has been pushing the Cloud Computing a lot lately.

With Apple tracking their sheeple, Facebook selling personal information, the uneducated thinking that Anonymous is the best thing since socialism and Sony finding out that nothing is unhackable...

I think that if Cloud Computing goes the way that they want it, there will be no more safety and privacy anymore.

What I worry about with this "cloud" computing.... you are basically "centralizing" all the data in these Massive Computer Data Centers with Tons and Tons of redundant servers, with massive numbers of hard drives, and backup power systems, connected to enormous bandwith going out to the communication lines...... They are building a Huge one right here outside Chicago.

It reminds me of a Army Base I once lived on.... they had built this "enormous" building (long ago), made to house a entire "Brigade" and their calvery.... (5,000 Men). THEN they figured out that airplanes could carry bombs, and they could be dropped in "one place" and the enemy could take out 5,000 troops in one fell swoop...... needless to say, it is the ONLY Building built in the entire World ever built to house that many troops in one location....lol

You can have all the redundant hard drives you want, and all the backup power you want, but...... What is going to happen when some Natural Disaster (tornado, earthquake, etc), or explosive attack.... takes place on one of these data centers?

POOF.!.!.! All gone!

And now even the Federal Government is implementing a plan to consolodate their data centers and use one of these "cloud" environments to store their massive amount of data....LOL

This is going to be fun..... (not)....

Where exactly is the safety and privacy now? I get what you're saying, I don't like cloud computing too much either, but this has been around a while.

One of the biggest selling points to business is that you "lease" the software - meaning it is no longer on your computer like programs are now.

I can see the good side of that - your system crashes so you grab the closest laptop, go online and you didn't miss a beat. However, we all know that updates, fixes and patches have a tendency to do more harm than good when first released. Not to mention what happens when it becomes a "pay to play" thing like WOW - $70 for the game and then another $20 a month to play it (I am making those numbers up but still...)?

Cloud computing is overpushed. Im not a fan of it because of slightly different reasons. (And what Anonymous has to do with Cloud Computing, nor "education" I do not know).

Anyhoo my reasons.

-Machines will be dumb terminals. Anything you "own" will really be rentals at most and in the cloud. You wont own software. You wont get to build/create your own computers. It will be different "tiers" of accessibility and function.

-Network bandwidth to really have a complex cloud will mean a infrastructure and price point that the US private network infrastructure lacks.*

_Server centers take a huge amount of power and also green house gasses to create and maintain. At least with home systems, they can be powered off or sleep. A server is 24/7 active.

_If you are at a place without bandwidth or something happens to the network. Your screwed.

*Look at the (lack) of success On Live has had.

Cloud is coming, however, I do hope there will be some compromise.
