Default Career change, any thoughts?

Well, I've been job hunting for a month now with no luck. I have sent dozens of resumes and applications and only had one interview. Seems to be a lot of competition out there right now. This has me considering heading down to the community college and taking some classes to try a new line of work.

So the question is, what would be a good field to study? Something with lots of good entry level positions that don't require a degree. Database administrators seem to be in demand around here but all I have ever used is Access. Any thoughts?

I'd pick something in high demand despite market fluctuations. Like the medical field. There's a guy that used to sell Kirby Vacuums, but when the market went south, he started selling and delivering Oxygen tanks to old folks. Now he drives a new Lexus...

According to the Wall Street Journal, the 3 areas of growth are IT, health care, and "green" jobs.

Just curious what were you doing?

I am thinking .......... freelance gynecology
and breast exams. The pay might suck, but the hours could be fantastic.
Good luck Wingracer.

Working on police cars and during slow times, office assistant. The Gov's last round of budget cuts killed my job. With a new Gov on the way there is a good chance of getting it back but it will be a while and I can't wait that long.

Every guy says that but I've seen the women at those hospitals. Sure you get the occasional smoking hot one but most I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole

Right now there is only one real line of work where you could have a job in any town or city in America, no matter how large or how small, easily obtainable, great pay, moving expenses paid for, sign on bonuses, etc... and that is Nursing.

Yeah, they are desperate for nurses around here. Just not my thing unfortunately.

Civil Engineers is the big demand now...

I work in IT ( Open Systems Unix Backup Engineer: Sun, IBM, Brocade, Hitachi and EMC hardware and Symantec Veritas Netbackup software.) and we have 2 openings we can fill because no one has the skill sets needed for the job. It sucks because I have to work so much and not get the OT....

IT is something I could see doing. What are the most sought after skills for entry level people? What sort of classes would be needed to get the job done?

Wing, let's open some sort of business. Basically, I'm in the same boat, also considering a career change.
