cable guy or satellite installation. pay is better than you would think and it never slows down. I did it for 6 years, then working in the O&G industry as an engineer for 3.5yrs, got laid off, well back to satellite installs. Better money anyway and I only work 5 days a week

+1.

i've been in the white goods service industry for 5 years now, doesnt pay too well unless you get to supervisor or manager level, but it pays the bills.

Dont expect discussing washing machines and diagnostics over the phone to be particually interesting though!

When I got retired in 1998 in oil and gas industry consolidation, bunch of folks were let go - over 1000 where I worked here in Houston, I know several who've made it in cable business, both the public like Comcast and commercial like Opt-Tel. They like it, basically own boss and are only in an office 10-15% of their time.

Stay away from construction, my bro just got laid off for the 3rd time in 14months in spite of a degree and 20+yrs experience.

this sounds interesting, I've been laid off since January have been looking for something for the longest time. What kind of training would you need or schooling? I'd like to hear more about this.

look on craigslist, alot of places will train you and pay you while training, prob need a late model truck and a little money to get ladder racks etc to start working but it pays for itself really quick. Some bigger contractors have vans or trucks depending on where you live.
