Swift- Look homie .......as long as I have been in this hobby and I think I have known you for that amount of time also. I have never.... ever..... ever ever ever seen you run anything other than a mini cooper! So why would you post something like that on this thread! On top of that when was the last time you even set a car on a track, in other words you don't even race. So you have to ask yourself does your opinion really matter? Dont post just to be posting brotha..... your better than that!
New Years Resolution- Think before you post!
They do make foams for minis you know!
Wow I hurt your feelings I didn't know I had that much power. All I am saying is that carpet has never been a big thing here in socal. From the days I used to race untill now the only one I have seen run carpet is BCR. We all know that if they put in asphalt it will draw the numbers, the benefit is they can lay carpet over top and whaa laaa you now have carpet racing. Obviously there are alot of costs "Associated" (no pun intended Sean) with asphalt but the investment would pay off. And to add to the comment of racing: if they only had carpet I would more than likely break down and start running it, I just like racing. I also never claim to be some awesome driver I just like to tease a little bit and most of the time you guys get a kick out of it and if you don't I am not the one who looses sleep at night. What ever they decide I am sure they will give it some serious thought and I thought I would give my 2 cents looks like I should have only given a penny for my thoughts Where is my change?

Short version - if it were asphault I could justify the drive from SD
Long version:
Recently Ive tried to make it up to OC to race but Ive found the that the distance and weather hold me back.
Maybe its just bad luck but every time ive raced up there theres been at least a 30 % chance of rain. This track takes that out of the equation for me so I know I can plan my schedule around going up there every so often
Still though, I really dont know If I want to go all the way up there if I have to pile on the cost of investing in carpet equipment. If it was the same as the racing we had down here I would be up there in a heart beat, but I dont know If I want to go out and invest in carpet parts (I doubt my chewed up Discount Hobby Raceway chassis would pass tech) if I would only make it up every so often. Im not a local so it probably doesnt really matter, but there are a few asphault drivers down here and I think they'd agree with me.
As un dialed as our local track (DHW) is - I think its pretty cool that someone can walk into the shop - buy a Ta05 or an rc18r and have fun right away. I dont know if that can be said with carpet. I might be talking out of my ass - but arnt there like tire truers and different pinions you have to run to compensate for tire wear and all that. This is just what Ive heard about carpet, but at least with foam I would think that there still would be a tire war and that isnt really conducive with noob racing

Wish it wasn't carpet:

It IS possible to run rubber tires on carpet. Not everyone has to run foams, in fact, I'd be surprised if rubber tire wasn't the bigger class once the track is open.
I think a carpet track would be awesome!!!! We have alot of parking lot tracks already and rumor is we will have other indoor asphalt tracks in near future..
So OCR building a carpet track is great for the hobby and there business.
Also you can buy any ready to run car and have fun at ANY track...even carpet.
I'm seeing a lot of the negative posts about carpet coming from the racers who haven't really had a chance to run on it.
You can bring a car set up for asphalt to the carpet track, put the right tire sauce on, put it on the track, and most likely be up to speed. A rubber tire carpet car really isn't setup that differently from an outdoor car.
Having a scratched up/beat up chassis won't hurt the carpet, however the one thing that will need to be monitored will be any loose screws on the bottom of the car, or a dragging body. Either of those things can rip the carpet up in the corners, and the only real way to "fix" the carpet is to just lay down strips of duct tape over the tear.
Carpet shouldn't be scary or discouraging, it's just a change from what we consider the norm. It's going to allow for a lot more people to race since you can do it on a lower budget, rubber tires last forever and seem to get better with more runs if your car is set up for it, and 1/12 cars are cheap and rarely break, when they do replacement parts are cheap as well.

I think J. summed it it well. It is possible to run rubber on carpet. One set of rubber tires on carpet will out last the same set on asphalt many times over.
I've run only a handful of times on carpet and enjoy it very much. Just make sure no screws are sticking out from the bottom of your car and you'll be fine.
I'm also looking forward to run rubber tires on carpet. It doesn't have to be a carpet edition car to work well on carpet.
Thanks OCRC for bringing a permanent carpet track to the SoCal area.

Yeah I know.......wait actually I dont know anything about carpet - I think thats why i was complaining.
I guess it just seemed like this completely different type of racing that would take alot of money to get into - but given I have zero experience Im really just making assumptions here. Ive been watching some youtube videos and it looks like a blast -
You guys are right though - I didnt read the whole thread before - but given the smaller size of the track carpet would probably be the best way to get the most speed(fun) per square foot
Truth is - if its indoor and the competition is good ill be up there regardless.
I think after my second time up there ill be buying an S120.
Im gonna look like an idiot here because its probably posted on the first page - but is this going to be in the same facility as the ocrc offroad track?

i grew up racing carpet. ran on the rug for prob 6 years straight in northern wisconsin. I really do enjoy rubber on carpet. The only caveat is that it's roguh on A-arms and hub carriers for beginers. But the fact that you can have a set of rubber that last for 2 months (and still be on the pace) far out weighs that negative.
This being said, I'll never go back to foam sedan. It's just too expensive, too cut throat and too difficult for newbs.
If we can run rubber on this track and have some what decent sized lanes (10' or so) i think the people will come.

Yeah, I know you are just expressing concerns about carpet since it is new and often when you see carpet run in the USA its often with foams. Anywhere else in the world they use rubber tires- the same ones used on asphalt most of the time. In fact, because foam tires on sedan on carpet can be intimidating for many people, rubber tire sedan and their asphalt cars are gaining huge popularity even here in the states. At many carpet tracks rubber tire sedan is even more popular than foam sedan. So you wont have to make initial big investments in order to run. Just run what you have and you'll have a good time. Then, since it is carpet, you have more options and could choose to run 1/12th or foam sedan adding to the wide range of classes that can be run. If not, just run what you already have, plus its indoors so you wont have to worry about weather.
