When I came by, the parking lines were really flooded with syrup. Is that because they were just sprayed? Maybe a good way to do the traction, is to get a sprayer which mists the syrup, rather than dousing it on the track? I am a little concerned with that, just because if we are racing, and you hit a painted line, and spin, it has the potential to really mess you up.
Other than that - the straight was huge and the lanes were super wide. Id like to see a little chicane in there somewhere, or something a little tighter honestly.
All in all - lets get er goin! I was watching the live feed all day from work haha.
After talking with Charlie Barnes (who probably has more parking lot prep/racing experience than anyone) and Barry Baker, they are both of the opinion that sugar water isn't going to have much of an effect on the brushed concrete surface. It may not even be worth the time and expense of applying it. Yes, where the painted parking lines are, the sugar water isn't absorbed into the concrete surface and actually creates a tacky bite on top of the paint...
Thanks to all that came out to play today. Track was slightly different and really fast.
Fast lap of the day was Steve Weiss with a 12.3 and J. Fillopow with a 12.4 in MOD. WOW>..
Ian....The track was just sprayed with soda when you saw it. It was not ready to run at that time...The painted lines were sprayed with extra sticky and worked out great. You should of tried to run your car...traction was really good after it heated up .. Remember...dont criticize it until you try it.
Im not Just saying what I was concerned with. I guess I just didnt know what was goin on. I should have run my car, but I had to go back to work
Ill be ready to go next next saturday though You can count on that.
I think the biggest key is just finding the ideal tire for the brushed concrete... The Sorex 36 premount tires were working well after a few laps, despite the cool (80 track temp). Our tires were coming off the track at right about 100 degrees, using 4.5 brushless motors. I also tried RP 30's at several points during the day, and after the track was in full shade and was at it lowest temp (roughly 70 degrees), I was able to get a few 12.1 laps. Steve and I (and I think Bitter, too), were simply prepping our tires by cleaning them with Buggy Grip.
A few setup adjustments are also helpful....a couple the things I changed to get my car to work better on this medium bite surface was to soften my shock setup (both oil and spring), raise my ride height (both front and rear, to 5.5 mm), and increase my caster (2 to 4). I am thinking that finding a 'better' droop setting would also help...
Overall, you want your car to create more mechanical grip, not to mention, be more forgiving over some of the bumpier sections of the track. By getting the car to squat/dive/roll more, it allowed more aggressive driving.
I also forgot to say thanks to Kevin and RB for putting the time and effort into preparing the track for all of us. Having the timing loop in place was a big help (and practically invisible, thanks to Paco!). Also the new driver's stand was also quite a help, too. Thanks.
I think the biggest challenge for future track prep is just going to be keep the pipes in place during club races. I would also love to see some nice, fat, bright ORANGE corner dots on a few of the infield corners, just to be able to see the apexes a little better...
Glad to see the timing loop is doing what it is suppose to do. Thanks for the props guys. Hopefully I can come try it out soon.
