Default Advice on batteries & racing p.

Hi,

my son and i will be racing 2x b4 buggies in stock class this year. other than a few used nicad packs for playing around, i bought two used trinity 3000 matched packs second hand ($60ea).

assuming there are 3 heats and perhaps a final to race, how many packs do we need for each buggy? I guess I'll be buying a second charger so we can recharge at the track.

I cant spend a fortune on the batteries and dont need to be super competive, so just looking for a battery that has enough punch for the duration of a 5 min race and one that wont drop off or die after a few months racing... (am i asking too much here?)

I was thinking of the 3000 mha venom sticks for $40 each or buying used matched 3000s of some sort for similar money- what do you guys reckon would be a better choice for us? how do you know what you get when you buy used cells? (the trinitys dont seem to have that much more punch than the newish 2400 nicad pack.. maybe i got ripped off or perhaps they just go for longer...have to try it out...)

I was thinking of get 4 packs so we have 6 all up- 3 each and then recharge the first one for the last race? does that sound okay?

thanks for your advice!

cheers,
martin

Martin

Good to see new faces get into the system,
You will be much happier with 2 chargers, will make life much simpler.
With regard to packs, send a PM to cannon, he matches the feral line of packs, i believe he has a battery spec that would be perfect for you, they are zapped but not matched GP3300's would have great voltage, and stock offroad you dont need mega runtime. Im not sure of his price but i guarantee you you wont be disapointed, also he is an offroad guy from way back he could offer other advice as you begin racing.

Good luck and dont be scared to ask and act on advice.

3 packs will be fine, as long as you let them cool down well between charges. get 3 and if you feel you need more get another one at a later date.

Have fun

Well i've got another question...
I read that batteries should be discharged to 5.4V (6 cells). I'm using the eagle racing cdc V6 charger. I'm selecting 20 amps to discharge but there's no option for voltage.
also, what is the cycle mode for?

many thanks!

Cant remember the settings of the CDC but the std setting will be fine. Just remember dont leave the pack with a lot of charge in them when stored, there are hundreds of methods of treating batteries, i have found whatever it is you do just keep it consistent from week to week, and try to keep them cool when charging and discharging. (by cool i mean room temp to warm not hot or cold)

Cycle mode will automatically go through a discharge/charge/ discharge process (cycle) this is not really require, only for the tossers who like to bench race their mates with numbers.

cut-off for a cdc is 0.8v per cell.

Good to see if your cells are crapping out on you, as i found out with new cells (GP3300's with a discharge of 2750 mamps)
