I must admit that I was one of the "drifting is a total wank" brigade. And there sure are plenty of people who think that.
My attitude changed when I had a play with an drifter. It's actually a helluva lot of fun. Not something you'd put your fully optioned Pro4 into perhaps, but fun nonetheless.
I think PVC tyres are the way to go. They never wear out, and they drift a lot more than the Yokomo drift tyres. They also slide more, which is the point, after all...
Like everything, there's always some that take it too seriously and make it sound like something it's not. Same as everything. And it's got more than it's fair share of idiots that think it's great (like anything else - normal RC cars come to mind).
Everyone needs to take it for what it is - a bit of fun, and a bit of practice in controlling your car in a slide. If you don't like it, that's cool. Don't do it. If you do like it, enjoy yourself. That's why we play with toy cars.
