RC3 is your closest club in No. Alabama. We're in the process of reloading our website:

We're a group out of the Huntsville area that race mostly on-road right now, but we're hoping RC Hobbies on Meridian Street will be cutting a track this spring.
As far as off-road tracks in the area I guess Cullman will be the closest today. Nashville has a small indoor offroad, and there's a thread on here already about the one over in Higdon (2 hours or so from Athens).
As far as what to get.......There are several good trucks out there right now. In the small-block class the Revo is impressive and makes a good basher/racer with the right tires and wheels. The Tamiya TNX is also a nice truck for the money, and comes with an OS/Tamiya .18 that will impress.
But if you're looking for a real basher, go with a big-block like the HPI Savage or the Associated Monster GT. Those are both tough trucks. The LST is an insane truck and a total blast to bash, but the power comes at a price in ruggedness. The LST2 is much better, but still has some weaknesses.
In the truggy market you need to check out the Ofna Jammin truggy RTR. It comes well equipped as an RTR for less than the PRO version, so you won't bust your wallet (too bad anyway

). The Hellfire is new and I'm not sure about it yet. Most of the guys were running the Hot Bodies Lightning Pro last year, but there have been several jump ship to the Jammin this year.
The guys at RC Hobbies can help you pick the right one for your budget.
